10 Top-Rated Hotels in Genoa, Italian Riviera, Liguria

August 7, 2022 Lashaunda Abraham

Wandering the narrow caruggi alleyways of Genoa is a bit like solving a medieval labyrinth. In the heart of the Italian port city lies Piazza de Ferrari, a main square with a beautiful fountain and a perimeter lined with historic buildings, including the Palace of the Doges the Teatro Carlo Felice, which was destroyed during WWII and subsequently rebuilt. The seaside neighborhood of Boccadasse is vision of pink and yellow buildings that brighten up this lovely fishing village.

The hotel is located in one of Genoa's most historic palaces, "Serra Gerace" palace that is part of the Rolli. Built in 1300, in 1700 it was already a Hotel de la Ville. The family-run hotel tries to blend the features of a 4-star Hotel with welcome and family warmth to try to make its customers feel like guests. The decor was made specially made by skilled craftsmen to allow to maintain the historical character of the era, which can be found in the marble floors present in the corridors and rooms of the second floor. The common rooms and rooms are also embellished with period posters and it is for this reason that the common areas of the Hotel are part of the museum of tourism, with the name of Room 16. The property consists of 16 rooms on two floors, the rooms on the second floor are the most spacious as there are suites that are lofted have two divided areas. Once guests have visited the city, they can relax at the Hotel's lounge bar, which is next to the reception or in the smoking/billiards room in the lofted part of the entrance. Space for improvement

I expected more from my stay at the Hotel de Ville in Genova. The first impact was great: the hotel is in a beautiful ancient palace facing the port, very close to the famous Aquarium (also facing a not-so-pretty fly-over though), the entrance stairs are truly sumptuous and the staff at the desk is invariably young, friendly and efficient. The rooms also initially confirmed this impression: they are remarkably large, with bathrooms verging to the "enormous". However, here comes the first problems: the large rooms look a bit empty and impersonal, a few more paintings, pictures, color in general would greatly help. The large cold floors deserve the use of slippers, that were not provided. Also the low ceilings and window, facing an inner yard, made the room rather dark. The worst problem was at night though: a mixture of but soundproofing, rude neighbors (some of them sporting a large dog) and bad luck made sleeping nearly impossible. On top of that, if in the morning one wanted to exploit the earlier departure of the noisy neighbors, could not sneak a bit of sleeping due to even noisier housekeeping, with employees talking loudly in the corridors and even listening to music on their smartphones. Truly annoying. The breakfast was good, and as I said the staff is probably the hotel best asset. Beware of the dodgy characters surrounding the hotel area after dark.

Great location, friendly staff, good value

The location is excellent, steps from the historical center, the shopping areas, opera house and many restaurants and cafes. Buses just outside and the metro a couple of blocks way. Rooms are small but adequate. Everything is clean and well-maintained. Breakfast is good, with a new Covid arrangement of allowing you to pick whatever you want from a menu instead of a buffet. The staff is excellent. Very friendly and many English speakers.

Superb, and remarkable value

Reviewed By BabetteLondon

We chose this hotel as it is so central in Genoa. It’s surprisingly good with luxurious touches such as a turn down service, fine sheets, linen towels and generous and excellent toiletries. Really efficient air on so you cannot hear traffic noise, and really comfortable bathroom with a tub in it as well as a shower. Really wonderful, with the possible exception being breakfast, which is generous and high quality but where fresh juice would be a real improvement.

We were once again back to staying a couple of more nights at this hotel, which is conveniently situated right across the piazza from the Principe train station. This time we stepped into our room only to find there was some maintenance work apparently in progress with some unfinished walls and door trim. We brought to the front desk staff’s attention and she immediately started working on resolving the situation, provided us with a larger, upgraded room and complimentary breakfast vouchers. We had a pair of comfortable nights stay. Kudos to the front desk lady, Grazie Mille!

Nice location but needs upgrades; do not use room safe as it may collect your card data (!)

Reviewed By SbmNwj

Great location and nice views but otherwise an overpriced hotel. The room was spacious and clean and the bathroom was quite nice, with good toiletries. But common areas need cleaning and upgrades, air conditioning is noisy, and lifts are unpredictable. This hotel ‘somehow’ collected my credit card data without my consent. The room did not have a safe that locks with a number code but a safe that can only be locked with a credit card (or any other magnetic strip card). I used a specific card for locking the safe, different from the card I used for my booking, but ‘somehow’ the hotel tried to charge that card for my stay. The only way the hotel could have obtained my card info was from that safe, which was supposedly not connected to any network. The staff and management were not helpful in resolving this, despite a clear proof from my bank that they tried to charge my card.

Elegant design, friendly hospitality, professional service and the finest quality for the price: all this is the Holiday Inn Genoa City, more than a hotel.

Great stay

Reviewed By Anca N

Rooms very ok, cleanliness ok. We had accommodation on the 7th floor with a magnificent view over the port. Breakfast varied and very good. The air conditioning is very poor in the room, it is set to a fairly high temperature, it does not cope. When we were there it was 30-32 degrees outside, and the room was very hot. In the room there are coffee making facilities, coffee and tea bags are free, but unfortunately only 1 sachet of Nes with caffeine and 1 sachet without caffeine. I find it ... embarrassing for the name of this hotel. We paid for 3 adults, it seems normal to have a sachet for each one. The same goes for water. A 0.5 liter bottle of water is free "on the house" only on the day you arrive. But ... same problem: 0.5 liters for 3 people?

Excellent hotel i quiet neighborhood.

Reviewed By Danexplorer

We had chosen one of the rooms with a terrace on the top floor, and it turned out to be a perfect choice where we enjoyed the first breath of fresh air in the morning and to relax before going to bed. The hotel is very clean, the breakfast is 'dangerous' (tempting you to eat too much), and the staff is gentle and efficient, so what can you wish more? Only one thing surprised us with a big bang. How is it possible that a five star hotel does not have toilet seats with soft close?
