Friendly staff, clean rooms and nice grounds

Reviewed By Cuffelink

Grounds are kept to a very high standard and are a pleasure to enjoy. Staff are friendly and helpful, and seem reasonably relaxed. The rooms are clean and reasonably kept with a TV, kettle and the usual amenities but they are rather basic and show signs for wear and age, could do with a repaint in areas and in suits are in need of a fix up to cover rust and wear. All in all. A very reasonable price for what you get and a nice place to bed, clean standard rooms just a little dated.

Our stay at Hotel Verdene was almost perfect. Me and my son stayed over for a gig at the Albert Hall on Friday 27th May. I had received swift and friendly responses to the questions I sent through messages about parking and checking in before we arrived. I got a personal call to explain the entry arrangements before setting off to get there from my home in Scunthorpe. When we arrived we were greeted by a warm welcome. The hotel was clean from stepping in the front door, up the stairs to our room on the second floor and into the room. The room was a twin with en-suite bathroom. My only fault was that the shower wasn’t great. We struggled to get the water warm and was more of a trickle than a power shower. I’d have given a 5/5 if it wasn’t for this. Otherwise, the continental breakfast included was great. Kellogg’s crunchy nut cornflakes, orange juice, pain au chocolat, bananas and cookies to go with the decent coffee and tea. Towels were clean and soft - folded on each bed when we entered the room. The bedding was soft and the mattresses really comfortable. Blankets in the wardrobe and an oil filled radiator for colder weather. Free parking in the street outside is a real bonus. There were buses into the nearby city centre from the bus stop over the road for our night out but only a half hour walk back for me and my son - or a short taxi ride for those who prefer not to. We received an equally warm thank you and goodbye on leaving. Anyone like us who also like to take in a quality English breakfast can find that within a 15 minute walk from Kro Bar. The beautiful Whitworth Park and art gallery just over the road. I’ll definitely stay here again. My wife and I are planning our next trip to Manchester and hope to stay at Hotel Verdene for that.

Rough around the edges

The exterior of the building as well as the surrounding area is pretty scary to be honest. You’re opposite a derelict nursing home and run down properties. I think the hotel also acts as a half way house of some sort- that’s the vibe we got, and we could smell weed a couple of times. However, the receptionist was lovely and helpful, and our room was beautiful! We had the double room with an en-suite and the interiors were stunning we were so impressed especially considering how the rest of the place looked. Overall very good for the price we paid, just be cautious of the area.

Untrustworthy Hotel

Reviewed By philipo49

I booked a single room with private bathroom but when I arrived I was given room number 5 which is basically a cupboard with NO window. It is tiny and very claustrophobic. I was very disappointed with this as I checked my booking and there was definitely no mention of it being a windowless room, something I would never have booked. So it felt very dishonest of the hotel to miss this information out. As I’m not one to normally complain, I’d decided to just stay as it was only one night. Next I turned on the tv and found no channels tuned, so I set it up to scan to find the channels. Unfortunately no channels were found so as well as being in a hot, windowless cupboard room, I also had no tv! So I went downstairs to inform the staff and they apologised and said all the rooms have no to at the moment because the ariel was damaged in wind a few weeks before. So as well as miss selling the windowless room, they also failed to inform customers of the lack of tv! Again, there’s no way I’d book a room without a tv. I told the staff I wasn’t happy with the cupboard like room and also having no tv and all the guy did was apologise. No offer to find a resolution, just a ‘sorry’ and expecting me to accept the situation. I stood my ground and said I don’t want the room and he offered me a full refund, which would have been fine but would have also left me in Manchester with no room at about 6pm. I told him if I take the refund he’d have to find me another hotel and suddenly he decided to actually do something about it. A quick check showed a double room on the front of the hotel was free so he offers me that instead because at least it was an actual room with a window. However, still no tv channels. Begrudgingly I accepted because I had no other option and tbf, the room was actually quite nice. But the way this hotel holds back important formation from customers prior to booking is misleading and unprofessional. I would never have booked a windowless room, nor one without a working tv but they withheld this information until I’d arrived and it was too late. And they way they expected me to just accept the situation without the offer of a solution is ridiculously poor. And for the record, the guy even acknowledged that the room was poor, so the6 know it’s substandard. And if anyone from the Lower Turks Head is reading this, Room No.5 is a cupboard and should not be sold as a hotel room! In all it was a very disappointing stay and I’d recommend you avoid this hotel.

They are thieves - you've been warned

Stayed in April for a place to crash after a night out. Went to check in, input card into machine, they said the machine wasn't working. They pulled out another card machine out so I did this again. Next day I noticed I was charged twice. Once by 'Selina' and once by 'Hatters Hostel'. Both transactions on the same date for the same value. I raised this with them and they confirmed I was billed twice and they will issue a refund. 5-10 days passed and no refund received. After consistent chasing by Mid May they were now claiming to have billed me only once even when I have provided evidence with a screenshot of my bank account showing I have been billed twice. They have no interest of having this resolved. No idea why they are using a card terminal either for a different establishment - seems incredibly fraudulent. I have had to raise this with my bank as the thieves at Selina won't answer my queries. As for the room - absolute hell hole and complete dump of an establishment.

Terrible, had to flee in the morning. Just don't go there!

Reviewed By pablohombre

Okay, the bedding appeared to be clean, but the condition of the room was very poor and I would hate to know what was in/on the carpet. The entrance and passage areas were shocking, filthy, smelly. The shared bathroom also appeared to be clean, but getting there over the passage carpet was hazardous. The sterilisation fluid dispenser was broken, the milk was stale and unusable coffee creamer and I could go on. I fled early on the first morning and went elsewhere for the rest of my stay.

DO NOT GO THERE, IT IS A SCAM

When my friend and I got there, we could already tell that we were in an unsafe environment because of the reception and receptionist's appearance. I do not mean to be rude, but the state in which the reception was, had nothing to do with the pictures. We checked in and got to the room. The corridors smelt and you could hear everything happening in other rooms. It was not clean at all. In the room there were spiders, there was dust everywhere, the paint in the walls was coming off and the walls were dirty, the window was open and broken so we could not close it... we were feeling really uncomfortable there and we were scared the receptionist was not going to be happy if we made a complaint as he was smoking in a room next door with his friends, which we could hear. It took us five minutes to leave.

Walk away!

Reviewed By H7817JKtomt

Some friends and I had booked a hotel to go to Soccer Aid at the start of September. Unfortunately this got cancelled and this hotel was the only available in the whole of Manchester that wasn’t even more ridiculously expensive. Firstly we had a guest room not toilet apart from the shared bathrooms for £250 a night!!! The house is in quite possibly the worst part of Manchester - you are greeted by the house next door which has a lovely piece of chipboard up instead of a glass window. We were sent codes to get in the front door and then our room. The smell as you first walked in was a combination of smoke, damp, urine (worse than my student house). You could lift the unfitted floor files off the floor. The chair was broken, the beds were wore. Vile room! We dumped our bags and got out after going using the toilet with just a UV light (probably to hide all the dirt). The smell of the place lingered in our masks from there to the city centre if made me feel quite ill. We returned as late as possible and went to sleep all of us slept above the covers until it got ridiculously cold. I shared a bunk bed with a friend it was extremely noisy as every time one of us moved it creaked. I woke up with. The worse sore back I’d ever had. My friend on the top bunk informed me he’d been up since 6 as he had heard scurrying from what he thought was a rat! We left as soon as all of us woke. I wouldn’t even rate the room if I could and booking.com should monitor these places regularly. It was an absolute hole! Do not stay!
