Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato)

Authentic homes moved from a nearby valley and preserved intact make this attraction a very special "open air museum."

Reviewed By Shodby - Mackay, Australia

Coming from Australia snow is a real treat. When we went to the Folk Village on New Years Day it was thick with powdery snow. We could still walk around as the sky was clear and blue. The water wheel was iced over and the thatched roofs had a foot of white powder. I was glad it was open however some of the areas such as the 500 year old hilltop castle were closed due to safety reasons.

Higashiyama Walking Course

Temples and shrines, a castle and private homes are among the sights along this 3.5 kilometer self-paced walking tour.

Reviewed By HappyFamily0f3 - London, United Kingdom

We thoroughly enjoyed the walk above Takayama town, exploring the various peaceful shrines and cemeteries along the way. It was quiet on a hot August day, but due to bear activity in the area it was recommended to bang a large metal can before entering some temples, just to ‘give the bears notice’ as one of the signs said. Unfortunately we couldn’t complete the route as the park was completely closed due to the bears. That was a shame and resulted in a long hot walk home along the road. Despite that, it is still a great way to spend a few hours in Takayama. There is also a great little quirky coffee shop along the way. Stop there for a drink and you’ll have your picture taken by the friendly owner and feature in his visitors book!

Shin-Hotaka Ropeway

Reviewed By nnjerusalem - Tel Aviv, Israel

While planning our trip to Japan, we also wanted to see some of the countryside outside of the big cities. The Shinhotaka Ropeway is a funicular ride to a observation point featuring beautiful snow covered mountains called the Japanese Alps, about 105 minutes from Takayama city. We were staying in a lovely ryokan called Kazeya so for us it was a 15 minute bus ride. The ticket from Takayama will cost around 2300 yen and the cable car to the top another 2700 yen but its a experience well worthwhile. If you combine a stay in a local ryokan you will also enjoy a wonderful Onsen spa.

Takayama Festival (Autumn)

Takayama in Gifu Prefecture is where the Autumn Hachiman Festival is held at Hachiman Shrine (October 9-10). The traditions of the Edo period have been scrupulously maintained even as eras change. Several hundred paradegoers dressed in traditional clothing perform court music and traditional dance as they transport the local shrine to its resting place. There are also special parade floats seen only in autumn. At night, they are lit with lanterns and paraded back to their storehouses while traditional songs are sung -- this is a true picture of Japanese seasonal tradition. Like its autumn variant, the Spring Sanno Festival at Hie Shrine (April 14-15) is also called the "Takayama Festival (Spring)."

Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall

The Takayama Matsuri (Festival) is regarded as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. (along with Chichibu Matsuri in Saitama Prefecture and the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.) The focus of the festival is the magnificent floats which are pulled through the strees of the town. The Takayama Matsuri actually composed of two festivals: the Spring Festival in which 12 floats take part, and the Autumn Festival which features 11 floats. The Takayama Festival began about 350 years ago as a simple village ceremony. Since Takayama is in Hida, the center of Japan’s timber producing region, the town grew as an important distribution center for the area, attracting large numbers of sake brewrers, cloth merchants, woodworkers, and other craftsmen.

You have two venues in one ticket. The first one is the floats exhibit, extraordinary!! Do not miss it. This century old floats are used in a autumn festival, beautifully crafted. The exhibit is changed every so often; you are given an audio guide. There is a second museum with small scale reproductions of Japanese landmarks; with such painstakingly detail!. On the back is an ancient active shrine.

Takayama Jinya

This interesting structure has been a government building since the 17th century and is now open to the public.

In use as an official government building complex from 1692 until 1969, this is the only existing building of its kind in Japan. A National Historic Site, the complex now houses a museum showcasing maps of the Hida region, historical town plans, documents of feudal lords, and the largest traditional rice storehouse in Japan. A visitor gets to see rooms that once served as guest rooms, conference rooms, office rooms, and an "interrogation" room depicting some persuasive methods. Don't miss this important place of interest where shoguns, feudal lords, government officials dealing with tax collection, policing, forest management, tax collection, and rice (tax payment) storage all contributed to its history. Go, enjoy. Please give a like if this is helpful, or you like the info. Thank you.
