Furutone River Ryuto Matsuri

During the Furutone River Ryuto Festival, which dates back to the 1920s, 200-250 of the largest lanterns in Japan (the size of one tatami mat or roughly 3m2) are floated down the Furutone River. Each of these lanterns is handmade by city residents without the use of a single nail. In total, with the addition of miniature lanterns, a 1km section of the river is transformed into a stream of mystical light. During the second day of the festival there is also a fireworks display that includes 100 fireworks of various kinds such as star mines and 30cm shells.
