Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen

Reviewed By Bubbles73uk - Weedon Bec, United Kingdom

The Musee des Beaux-Arts at Rouen is one of the best provincial museums in France, so if you are in Rouen on a rainy day like I was (or even if it isn't raining!), I highly recommend setting aside a couple of hours for a visit. The Cathedral Notre-Dame in Rouen was a recurring subject for Monet when he lived in nearby Giverny, and this excellent museum displays one of these canvases, along with works by Gericault, Boudin, Sisley, Renoir, Caillebot, Delecroix and many others. The paintings collection is especially strong, but there are also many fine sculptures and objets d'art. The whole museum has a very modern and professional air. And it's free! Unbelievable for a museum of this quality.

Rue du Gros-Horloge

Reviewed By simply-peregrinating - Waddington, United Kingdom

This bustling street from the cathedral down to the market is a lovely one to walk on because of all the things to see along the way. Of course the clock tower is the main attraction especially when the sun light catches it and it glistens. There are plenty of half timbered buidings painted in various colours to see. The street does get busy especially near the clock.

The 90+ minutes flew by as we listened to the story of Jeanne d’Arc in a well conceived and executed multimedia presentation that takes you through a beautifully restored bishop’s palace. The only problem are the extremely uncomfortable earphones that you need for the well done English translation.

Eglise Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc

A 1979 masterpiece of modern minimalist architecture, this dramatic church is meant to symbolize the search for 'absolute geometrical purity.

Reviewed By VincenzoS129 - Los Angeles, United States

This church is modernistic and simplistic yet it seems to command awe. The stained glass windows that are from another church are well placed and accessible for close viewing - something that most of the classic churches and cathedrals do not provide. The location at the old market square of which there are still some old ruins can place you in a time warp and take you back to the 1400's.

Place du Vieux-Marche

Reviewed By 590JackK - Lebanon, United States

While my title might seem like a contradiction, it is not. The city itself is quaint, though not so small, with wonderful places to see and eat. Heck, it's the medieval quarter of the cultural capital of Normandy. Notre Dame Cathedral sits here (actually, a favorite subject of Monet's), and it is worth a visit there to see the awesome interior and the burial place of Richard the Lionheart. As you stroll through town, you'll also see the ornate Astronomical Clock, supposedly the oldest in the world. What's melancholic about Rouen is the spot you can visit where Joan of Arc was sentenced to death and the Place du Vieux Marche, where she was burned at the stake. A statue of Joan marks the place of the pyre. She is one of France's greatest heroes, and is, of course, noted as a saint. Even if you've never had any particular interest in her before, this is intoxicating history, worth learning about. If you're visiting the area, don't pass by Rouen; you won't be disappointed.
