Ker Place

Ker Place, formerly named Kerr Place, is the headquarters of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society located in Onancock, VA. This magnificent Federal period Georgian style house was built in 1799 for prosperous merchant farmer John Shepherd Ker and his wife Agnes Corbin Ker and their family. It is described by the Virginia Historical Landmarks Commission as "the finest and most elaborate Federal mansion on Virginia's Eastern Shore," and "one of the Shore's major architectural landmarks." This house operates as a museum that is open for visitors with trained volunteer docents giving guided tours of the interpretive interior as well as various exhibits, laboratories and research space. It is also used as a venue for weddings and other special events for the community. Tours of the house are available throughout the year by appointment or March - December. We suggest that you call ahead to ensure that a docent will be available.

We visited on a slightly rainy Saturday and we're the o lay visitors at the time so we got a private tour. The house is beautiful with amazing architectural detail that have been refurbished. While none of the furniture is original to the house they have done a nice job of recreating what it would have looked like during the Ker residency. I was less impressed with the upstairs which is set up more as a museum for prominent families on the eastern shore. There is nothing wrong with this, I just prefer to really focus on the family who lived in the home. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the house and local history. The tour took about an hour and was free so it was the perfect way to immerse yourself in some local history.

Sparse Antique Mall at the southern tip of coastal Virginia. I try to go to places like this in remote places, but this just seemed to be lacking cool stuff. Signage said it was the 2nd largest in the state.

Eastern Shore Railway Museum

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this out of the way museum. There is an interesting collection of such items as railroad lanterns, posters, tools, etc. Outside you'll find several train cars and even the old Hopeton, Va station, as the Parksley station was razed a number of years ago. The very informative guide took us through each car (she has to unlock each one). It was interesting to learn about the importance of the railroad to the Eastern Shore in the early 20th century.

Virginia Hang Gliding

My boyfriend and I took a scenic flight with Bill and it was the highlight of our trip, especially because my boyfriend got to fly the plane for most of the trip! Also, Bill has incredible knowledge of the history and geography of the region, and is a really fun guy! Plus, when he found out that we originally wanted to go hang gliding but couldn't because it's out of season, he gave us the whole flight for free! We are definitely planning on taking another flight--either in the plane or in a hang glider--with Bill when we come back to the shore!
