10 Things to do in Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda That You Shouldn't Miss

December 9, 2021 Alice Mieles

Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

Akihabara

Every electronic gadget imaginable can be found in the stores of this hi-tech, neon-lit neighborhood. The Sony Plaza is one of the most popular shopping destinations in the district.

This part of Tokyo is nick named ‘Electric Town’ because after World War II it was a major shopping center for household electronic goods and the post-war black market. Today you can find anything electronic here from cell phones, gaming consuls, cameras, computers and peripherals, and anything anime. We visited a couple stores selling only old original computer consul games from 30 years ago! There are also several multi-floor arcade gaming sites. My favorite store behind the train station was Yodabashi Electronics which was the largest electronics store I’ve ever seen. Think of it as a ‘Best Buy’ store multiplied by 10 in size!

KANDA MYOJIN Kanda Myojin is a 1300-year-old shrine located in Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. The deities are enshrined at lchinomiya, Daikoku-sama (matchmaking), Ninomiya, Ebisu-sama (prosperous business), Sannomiya, and Taira no Masakado(game luck). Because it is close to the business district of Tokyo, it is a shrine that is crowded with many business people and many worshipers to benefit.

An important cathedral in the design of Dr. Josiah Condor. This time, I visited for coverage. The appearance of standing in this very quiet area seems to cleanse your heart. Even those who are not interested in architecture can feel the times when they come here.

Origami Kaikan

Reviewed By psush_girl - Beijing, China

I need to start by remarking on the kindness of the instructors of the origami workshop. When we e-mailed them to book our 2 spots, we were informed that they normally only allow 6 people but they had already allowed double the amount of people to join the workshop, and would be allowing us to join as well. When we arrived on the day of the workshop, the new number of participants was up to 16 and this new number did not affect the quality of instruction one bit! Not only were the instructors knowledgeable and patient, but they made each participant feel proud of their work, no matter their skill level. We also had the opportunity to meet and watch a master origami artist perform his craft and it was a sight to behold! If you are ever in Tokyo, you should definitely check out Origami Kaikan; it’s worth every yen and you will not be disappointed.
