When Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang (KMT) arrived with his soldiers and their families, they grew up in villages like these. Hsinchu's Chenghuang Temple Night Market is famous for food, particularly for vermicelli, which air dries in Hsinchu's constant wind. The meatball soup is also delicious. Many people visit the night market just for the food; it's often crowded.
