Newby Bridge Halt Railway Station

Reviewed By 441tonye - Clayton le Woods, United Kingdom

Newby Bridge Halt is 250 metres on the right up Station Road (opposite the Swan Hotel). It is the middle station between Haverthwaite (main station & engine sheds) and Lakeside (where the cruises start). You can board the steam train at Newby Bridge Halt (except when corona virus has it closed) and buy a combined ticket for the train, boats and aquarium. You can enter the Halt and walk around the gardens and look in the shelter at all the photographs of the Halt in the old days. *** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ***

Fell Foot Park

Less than 20-minutes’ drive from the M6 at the most southern end of Lake Windermere, Fell Foot is one of the few places with free access to England’s largest lake. It's a family-friendly park perfect for paddling, boating or swimming, from beginners to the more advanced. Have a picnic on the lawn or a pizza from the wood fired Land Rover pizza oven on a Thursday evening, or visit the Boathouse Café and choose from a selection of hot food and drinks. Take a stroll along the paths with a backdrop of mountain views and explore the flower meadows and Pinetum – the park’s collection of specimen trees. Recently restored Gothic revival boathouses opened to the public for the first time in 2019. Rowboats, kayaks and paddleboards are available to hire from April-October, and the new Active Base includes secure lockers, showers and underfloor heating in its state-of-the-art changing rooms. In July 2019 the park became the first place in the Lake District to have a Changing Places facility.

Finsthwaite Tower

From Newby Bridge railway bridge, turn left & follow 'Public Footpath' up to the 1799 war memorial tower with stone plaque on the south facing elevation. It was originally built as 3 storeys but the top storey was removed many years ago. Originally a viewpoint but during the 20th century dense woodland has been planted, and now has no views. The entrance doorway has been blocked up.

I recommend a hike up to Finsthwaite Tower to all my guests staying at Swan View, especially if they have young children. The magic on their faces when they see this 'secret castle' is lovely to see. When you have seen the tower you can turn left to Finsthawite village (past the old v new forest viewing point) or turn right to Lakeside and the steamers. After that walk you feel fit and hungry!

Newby Bridge Weir

Reviewed By pbramham - Kendal, United Kingdom

A lovely location. Very peaceful, even though only literally a minute off the main A591 road. look for waterbirds such as "Dippers". You may be pestered by ducks if you have sandwiches! No problem eh? Limited parking, but not a problem as it is rarely found or visited. A couple of hotels very nearby for drinks/snacks. If you are lucky a steam train will pass behind you on the preserved Lakeside-Haverthwaite railway ( about hourly I think in tourist season)

Lakes Aquarium

Lakes Aquarium is situated in the picturesque area of Lakeside on the shores of Lake Windermere, the aquarium is home to a wide array of creatures from local freshwater and marine fish to reptiles and amphibians. Be amazed as you pass through the underwater tunnel where pike, carp and diving ducks swim.

We really enjoyed our visit around the Aquarium, lots to see. Great value for money, markers for the direction we needed to go which was great and hand sanitiser everywhere. I enjoyed this so much better than the sea life centre. I would highly recommend a visit aswell as a ride on the steam train.
