Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival

This festival is held every year from late April to late May in Matsumae Park, selected as one of the 100 best places to view cherry blossoms. Around 10,000 trees in 250 varieties with blossoms in various colors and shapes bloom at different times during the cherry blossom season. These cherry trees are said to have originated from many varieties brought to Matsumae's prosperous castle town from Edo and Kyoto, and they were protected and cultivated through the efforts of the local people in the years that followed. Many events are held during the festival, including a samurai warrior parade, a Matsumae local products fair, a tea ceremony experience, and a celebration of the birth of Buddha.
