February 20, 2022 Jasper Kershner

Lori (Armenian: Լոռի, Armenian pronunciation: [lɔˈri] ( listen)), is a province (marz) of Armenia. It is located in the north of the country, bordering Georgia. Vanadzor is the capital and largest city of the province. Other important towns include Stepanavan, Alaverdi, and Spitak. It is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries and the well-preserved Akhtala monastery, where Armenians, Georgians, and Greeks make an annual pilgrimage on September 20–21.

Akhtala Monastery

Reviewed By WorldWideTravel88 - Bangkok, Thailand

We were fortunate to visit Akhtala Monastery during Sunday morning service on a beautiful sunny day with natural sun rays coming through via the windows which highlighted the beautiful paintings inside. This is a unique site to visit if you like Gregorian Churches. The rings outside on the monastery grounds are interesting as well and are meant to represent the hurdles that couples must go through and the tradition is for couples to hold hands and step on the snake and scorpion as a symbol of overcoming difficulties together.

Mikoyan Brothers Museum

Genuinely something completely different! We see influences of the Soviet Union on our travels through Armenia, but it is part of Armenia’s history that is rarely talked about and often ignored. The Soviet Union left its mark with the concrete tower blocks we see in the regional industrialised towns, but did you know that Armenia had a great influence on the Soviet Union. Two remarkable Armenian brothers you have probably never heard of, born in the small village of Sanahin, who changed not just the Soviet Union, but impacted on world history. Please let us introduce you to ANASTAS and ARTEM MIKOYAN and be prepared to be astonished. ANASTAS was one of the longest serving members of the Soviet Politburo, from the early Stalin years through to Brezhnev. His life and career were extraordinary and never fail to surprise our visitors. ARTEM was the creative genius and co-designer of MIG fighter jets. One of our exhibits is a genuine MiG-21 and we're ENGLISH FRIENDLY

The museum is located near the old Sanahin monastery, so I recommend to visit both places during Your trip to Alaverdi. Inside the museum You will find a very nice and interesting collection of various Mikoyan Brothers personal things and learn a lot about them and their work. The museum staff is very kind, helpful, professional and knowledgeable - they speak also English. Outside the museum You will find a beautiful garden with a breathtaking mountain view, memorials and - of course - a famous MiG-21 fighter aircraft on display. You can also buy some very nice souvenirs (magnets, postcards, pens etc.) inside the museum building and support this fantastic museum. I recommend this museum to every aviation and history fan. I hope to visit this place again in the future! Thank You for a great experience and wish You all the best! :-)

Monastery of Sanahin

Reviewed By JaneneDavis - Cambridge, United States

Visited the Haghpat Monastery and Sanahin 10-13th centuries UNESCO heritage sites in the fall, 9 November. About 35 km from Georgian border. Stunning views from this mountain location. Haghpat is regal with commanding views and Sanahin is so beautiful and serene capturing all the fall colors. Haghpat lies on a dissected plateau and ascent to and from the river is quite a climb. I was fortunate to be accompanied by Lilit who is a very knowledgeable guide and provided detailed descriptions of the complex and Byzantine ecclesiastical and traditional vernacular architecture of the Caucasian region. And importantly the history. If you have an accomplished guide it adds so much more to the experience. The monasteries were important learning centers for centuries. Haghpat Monastery was once one of the largest centres of science, with a rich collection of manuscripts plus places for copying and studying. Monks could study medicine, astronomy, music, literature, etc One of the handful of Armenian khachkars to feature Jesus Christ is on display at Haghpat Monastery. Not too far from the monasteries is the 5-7th Century Holy Church of Odzun perched on top of a high plateau. Three naves of pink felsite basilica and barrel vaulted roof with a later 19th century of two small bell towers addition is a charming sight. We were fortunate enough to meet the engaging priest who gave us a personal tour, and I suspect he does this often. Please note that the 175 km drive in view of road works made this a long day and probably added an hour to our drive. The positive side was that Lilit used this time to provide me with her impressions of current and past history and culture of the Armenian people which made it very personal. Ruben, our driver, was diligent at navigating his way through all the road constructions safely, and we all had great fun stopping at the bakery on the way there. These sites are amazing and time well spent if you are interested and intrigued by Armenia’s history and culture. Highly recommend Jan Armenia Tours and Lilit and Ruben who made me very welcome and ensured that I had a great time.

Stepanavan Sochut Dendropark

Stepanavan dendropark is located in Lori province, close to Gyulagarak village, about 85 km from Yerevan. This is a natural forest with many unique trees and plants, a part of them is brought from the Yerevan botanical garden, the rest from different countries, such as Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Germany, France, etc. Dendropark is a perfect place for eco-tourism and public excursions, where the nature and the air itself are amazingly pure and healthy. I strongly recommend to every tourist visit Dendropark and take photos. The entrance is free so far!!
