Burg Nanstein

My first walk up the hill to the castle wearing jeans in August was a bit warm, to put it mildly. On subsequent trips I wore shorts and had a much time. The castle grounds provides an excellent view of the city below and there is a small cafe where you can buy lunch and refreshments with outdoor seating. There is a small entrance fee to enter the castle proper, about $4.00 US. Once inside you are free to explore from top to bottom. The castle is centuries old and it obvious it has been under reconstruction various times during it's history. Adults are likely to appreciate the beautiful views and historical information, while children will certainly enjoy exploring all of the nooks and crannies.

Bismarck Tower

Reviewed By pudgeUSAF - Savannah, United States

As everyone has said - fantastic views of the surrounding area from a 100+ year old stone tower. We had a very tough time finding the place though, for mainly 2 reasons. First - “Bismarck Tower” is a generic term for the dozens of towers erected around the turn of the last century in respect to the former Chancellor. Navigating to this specific one was in itself a challenge. Second - our iPhone GPS took us on to the Landstuhl Army base (we have military IDs so we got on), but when navigation ended we had the base perimeter fence in between us and the tower! After driving off base again, we discovered a trail head just outside the main gate to Landstuhl (North side of the road, no more than 150 yds from the gate). From this trail head it’s about a 45-60 minute hike, moderately strenuous and mostly uphill, to the base of the tower. It was a very pleasant hike and as long as you keep following the trail to the right you’ll eventually get there. You’ll bee rewarded with a breathtaking view of the village of Landstuhl, Nanstein Castle, and the surrounding area. The trail we took in does continue on to the east, so I believe you can walk from here all the way to Landstuhl and Nanstein, but I can not verify.
