Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall

2 kms from Norheimsund direction Bergen, just by route 7. One of the best known and photographed Waterfalls of the country, where you can walk under and behind the waterfall. Stone monument astrophysicist Svein Rosseland. Represented Norway on Expo 2000.

We are staying in Oystese on the Hardangerfjord and spent the day in that region.
The Steindalsfossen was a 12 minute drive and well worth the visit.
The waterfall is not huge but the water current is quite powerful and impressive. The small river just "drops" off the top of the mountain ridge creating this waterfall - the water quickly flows and merges into the river at the bottom.
There is a little walkway along the waterfall, underneath it and up to a small Terrace where the falls can be viewed with the neighbouring valley in the background.
Excellent place to take lots of pics.
At the entrance are 2 souvenir shops also selling coffee/light food.

We (2) visited the Hardanger Akvasenter in last May (2015). It is indeed a must-know visit, and a very very pleasant one. The road there is magnificent, and the views exceptional. The farm is located in the fjord water, and it is indeed a very lovely sight by itself. You get there by a short walk (150m. approximately) over a floating bridge over the water. The facts are of real interest, and beside the knowledge that most Salmons are from pools (and not the sea), you may learn everything on how do they make it for the past ~30 years, when aqua agriculture has been developed in Norway (Are these better than those from the sea?). Simen, our very knowledgeable guide was very attentive, so kind and you might easily see how much he is committed and proud with what they are doing there. Very Interesting, very much enjoyable and lovely experience, everyone in the Hardngerfjorden should have. Plan ahead and allow enough time for the visit (2-3hr.).

We visited during the off-season but the staff were very friendly and obviously had both knowledge and passion for the works of Ingebrigt Vik. The 25 minute film is a must before visiting the scuptures next door. (A few corrections in the translation from Norwegian to English in the movie were kind of funny but should be weeded out: It's fuss, not fuzz) But apart from that I would recommend a visit here both because the surroundings have shaped the scuptor and one also learns about life for Norwegians as well. Recommended.

Hardanger Maritime Museum is a national centre of expertise which is committed to boat preservation, is an outdoor-pursuits centre, a craft training centre and a guardian of old craft traditions. The place is a small working shipyard, specialized in traditional wooden boats and building boats in the tradition of the vikings. You can see really how boats are built and all the crafts necessary to build a traditional ship incl a forge, an iron workshop and a ropeway. What is even greater: you can try a lot of these crafts yourself like make your own rope or learn how to put together planks in a boat.
As a real nice bonus you can lend a traditional rowing boat (included in the price) and try it yourself on the fjord.
Overall a great and very interactive experience!

The Goldfish Lake

The Goldfish Lake or Skarsvatnet, 5 km from oystese direction Porsmyr/Fyksesund. It gets its name from the colour of the fish, gullfiskvederbuk, imported from the Congo and stocked into the little lake in 1914 by doctor Klaus Hansen and Munch Soegaard. This fish is a rare specie in Europe. Location ideal for picnic. Bathing facilities and good parking conditions.

Reviewed By Michael N - Tel Aviv, Israel

It is unlikely that one will stumble onto this place accidentally- as it is literally in the middle of nowhere. There are signs pointing to Gullfiskvatnet - Gold Fish Lake - but even when we got there we had a hard time locating where you actually access the lake - it was completely abandoned.
We did finally find it. It has a small wood shed with 2 picnic tables and access to the lake. There were a few ducks and a bunch of large gold fish (not the small ones used in home aquariums). Both ducks and fish must be overfed - they showed limited interest in breadcrumbs thrown their way.
Pleasant place for a picnic if you are close by - wouldn't bother otherwise.
