Görlitz ([ˈɡœɐ̯lɪts] ( listen); Polish: Zgorzelec, Upper Sorbian: Zhorjelc, Lower Sorbian: Zgórjelc, Czech: Zhořelec) is a town in the German federal state of Saxony. Located in the region of Lusatia on the Lusatian Neisse River, it is the second largest town of Lusatia after Cottbus, and the largest in Upper Lusatia. Görlitz is the capital of the district of Görlitz, the easternmost district of Germany. It lies opposite the Polish town of Zgorzelec, which was a part of Görlitz until 1945.

The Landskron Brewery is kind of off the normal tourist trail for Americans, but once I contacted the marketing department to inform them we would like to have a tour they could not have been more accommodating. The brewery is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Goerlitz train station and easy to find. Our tour including a visit to the modern visitors' center (all displays are German/English), then we had a guided tour of the production/storage facilities in the historic buildings conducted by a great guy named Ulrich (with my baby German I could understand about 40%), but hey, besides the history we are also there to sample the beer. Our tour included a buffet lunch with open tap afterwards which was a real treat (the Kellermeister Tour). Give yourself 2-3 hours for the total experience. It is worth it.

This is a medium-sized museum in the middle of Gorlitz dedicated to the history, crafts, and arts of Silesia, a region of central Europe. Presently, the region is considered part of Poland, but in the past various German states and Bohemia also included parts of Silesia. The museum takes up several levels of an historical building. (There is a lift.) Entry was six euros per person and included an audio guide. Rooms were arranged thematically, either around certain historical periods or collections of related crafts. Placards were in German and Polish, but many exhibits also included comprehensive audio entries in English. Naturally, some knowledge of a local language would be helpful with reading all of the information presented. This is a bright and modern museum. It was not crowded during our visit. Items seemed carefully curated and were described in a professional, informative manner. The facilities were clean, with lockers, nice restrooms, and a small gift shop. There were no issues with photography. We spent approximately two hours in the museum, but we could have easily stretched that out to three or four hours. Items ranged from the whimsical, like folk statues of local spirits, to the somber, such as coats and personal items from families displaced by war. As it was, we sped through sections devoted to World War II, the Communist era, and the region’s modern art scene. This museum is highly recommended. If you’re short on time, I would suggest heading directly to sections that pique your interest. Otherwise, browsing slowly is equally rewarding.

You learn a lot of a city by visiting the old graveyoards, where possible. This one is just gorgeous, with really old stones from over 100 years ago. You see rich families buries next to poorer ones and it all has the feeling of decay, you should have in a graveyard. It is a green area and also very relaxing if you just want to sit for a few minutes and read

We were fortunate that the Kaufhaus was open during the Thursday of our visit. This is an amazing building which will hopefully be preserved & developed by its new owners.
