The Funiculare provided us with an excellent way to visit Erice from Trapani w/out having the typical parking problems (there is plenty parking space at the base); the views are amazing. While each cabin seats 8, I would say that 6 fit comfortably; no waiting line at all, it runs for long hours.

Matrice Church

Build in the local stone in C14th, the duomo looks quite plain from the outside but it is beautiful inside - it's situated very near to Porta Trapani. The lace-patterned ceiling is most unusual and quite stunning and there is a lovely rose window. You have to pay to enter but you can get a combined ticket that allows you entry to the next-door tower and several other churches which is good value.

Chiesa Madre - Duomo di Erice

Reviewed By BrigitteGolightly

Erice is just that kind of town. Nothing takes your breath away but everything exudes such elegance and charm, you just want to let it seep in. Chiesa Madre is another of such example. The exterior takes you back centuries and reminds you of a distant unadorned past. However, step inside and the intricate gothic lacework on the ceiling is a delight to the soul. it is well worth paying 6 euros to do the few key look outs and churches. just walking from one small church to another and counting the stones along the paved lanes is one simple joy in Erice. Watch out for the slippery stones.

No need to actually enter the castle (which closes at 2pm, at least on a Thursday). The garden around offers some fantastic views over the clifftop castle and the surrounding landscape! We drove up in a rental car, beautiful drive indeed!

Castello di Venere

Reviewed By V8981UNdanm - Tel Aviv, Israel

Absolutely stunning Landscapes, don't miss this place If you've paid the 9euros for the round trip with cable car, and if you're up there then missing this spot would be a massive Fomo. You can reach it strolling in the narrow and beautiful streets of this village and eventually get there at the end of the village, or go straight from the Cable car by taking the southern street boarding the village to its end. You'll reach then 3 interesting places: the Garden of Balio, the Castello del Balio o Pepoli and last the Castello di Venere with this spot to see the landscapes tens of kilometers around. Really beautiful and actually might be more the purpose of this trip than the village itself.

The Tower of Pepoli is well worth a visit. When we went it seemed that many other visitors bypassed it (maybe because it is a step ramp in and out), but we were very pleased we went it. It has been beautifully restored and if that isn't enough, the 360 degree views will delight you.

Porta Trapani

Reviewed By JulieM531 - Wellington, New Zealand

We looked out on this charming piece of history from our accommodation. Even though it is so old and narrow it is the main exit from this delightful small very old town. It actually marks the prestigious, historical entrance point. It leads to the first important site in the old town – Chiesa Matrice. Also from there uphill - Via Vittorio Emanuele leads to the town’s central point: Piazza Umberto I.
