10 Things to Do in Carraroe That You Shouldn't Miss

December 29, 2017 Renato Branum

Carraroe (Irish: An Cheathrú Rua Irish pronunciation: [ənˠ ˌça(h).ɾˠuː ˈɾˠuˑə], its official name) is a village in County Galway, Republic of Ireland. The village is within the Irish-speaking region (Gaeltacht) of Connemara, and is famous for its traditional fishing boats known as Galway Hookers. Its population is widely dispersed over Carraroe peninsula between Greatman's Bay (Cuan an Fhir Mhóir) and Casla Bay (Cuan Chasla). Carraroe has an unusual 'coral' beach, Trá an Dóilín, a biogenic gravel beach actually made of coralline algae known as "maerl".

Wolfhound Adventure Tours

Reviewed By donaldehall - pasadena,ca

Wolfhound offers three tours of Ireland: Southern, Western and Northern. We took the Southern tour in August 2017. First, let me tell you what this is not. I have been on week long bike tours by five different companies, including Backroads, VBT and Sojourn. They were all just fine and very similar. Wolfhound was different. Note it is billed as Biking, Hiking and History. And indeed you got some of all these. The accommodations were nice and comfortable but not posh. It is hard to separate out whether the special aspect of this trip was due to the beautiful and interesting country or the tour guide Dave O’Conner. Probably a combination of both. Dave was without question the best tour guide I have experienced. While the other outfitter guides all have good knowledge of the sites, Dave’s breadth of knowledge was much deeper, not to mention his sense of humor. Having studied history at university he was erudite and well informed in all aspects of Ireland, from its history to its current status – political, economic and social. He toured with great sensitivity to his guests adjusting the tour for the desires of the group and the constantly changing weather.
I hope to someday book another with Dave. My colleague who went with me has done so already.

What a great place - staff were friendly, entertaining and so welcoming, they had so much knowledge about all of the birds and were informative but kept it light hearted and entertaining. They are all very passionate and care about the birds and it’s clear that they are well looked after. Excellent day out 10/10

Staying in Killybegs we took the opportunity to go up to the Slieve league on quite a rainy windy January ......
The site is just incredible , apart from the majesty of the cliffs the area has been so thoughtfully set for safe visits to the area ensuring it is accessible to everyone. If the weather hadn’t been even some up unpredictable we would ha have walked higher but there is a developed path and viewing area that nothing is missed.
I’m sure it would be a fantastic place in softer weather to stop and enjoy nature at its best even lovely set out indestructible picnic tables that have defied every storm this year so far!!
There is a lovely looking tea room and craft shop about 5 mins away but it was closed as seasonal but I made sure would be a great little spot.
Thank you to Donegal for ensuring mighty nature is protected but accessible.

Anywhere else in the world … this would be World Heritage Listed, and a major tourist attraction.
One day (maybe sooner rather than later), it will be given the World Heritage status it deserves. Before that happens, come and experience …. sheep wandering over the mounds .... on the day I went, I was the only participant on the tour … so a ‘private tour’ …
Indeed, the whole reason these sites have survived, is that the land has been used for grazing sheep / cattle. If the land had been used for industry or crops, the monuments would have been destroyed / lost.
There are over 240 archeological sites spread over a 6.5 km area, not all can be visited, as lots are on private land, so much to see and appreciate, wonder and learn.
My tour guide was the manager, Daniel, who is an archaeologist and an absolute wealth of knowledge .... I learnt so, so much .... not just about the buildings / structures, but about the mythology of Queen Maeve and the the entrance to the other world !
If you want to enter 'the other world' (Oweynagat) bring some overalls to wear over your clothes ... the entrance is narrow and muddy .....
If you are travelling in the off season, probably best to ring and book the tour .... rather than just 'turning up' !
I highly, highly recommend ..... I have visited lots of other ancient sites in Ireland, and (in my opinion), this is the very, very best. So much information to absorb ... I will have to come back for repeat visits ......
They also run lectures - so if you are going to be in Ireland for a while, ask to join their mailing list !

We took the Coastal route and enjoyed it very much. Mullaghmore is a small fishing village. The harbour is very pretty. We drove on the coast road to Mullaghmore head (this is where international surfers come in search of big waves called 'prowlers'. i was told that swells can reach up to 30m (approx. 100 feet). This usually happens in the Winter. There is a lovely castle visible on the approach road to Mullaghmore (private property, owned by the Mount Batton family, part of the English Royal Family) Look at the M.B.on the entrance gates to the castle!

Located a few miles north of Donegal town, Lough Eske is still very rustic and unspoiled. Numerous points to access. A walk from the Lough Eske Castle Hotel is a nice leisurely stroll through the woods to the lake.
