Tash Rabat

Reviewed By nonwrong - Hong Kong, China

At first I was quite frustrated and almost gave up because I have been calling and emailing for 2 days but didn't get any reply. Then I got an SMS to go directly to the camp.Someone called but we couldn't understand each other. When I arrived at noon,I was the only guest. I walked around and took photos till 3 or 4pm. Someone must have noticed that I had gone without food for a long time and asked if I was hungry. He said dinner would be at 8pm. At first I said I would wait but then I changed my mind.He took me to a canteen where there were biscuits and bread. He made some chopped carrot with a delicious dressing which devoured like a hungry wolf. The next day someone asked if I would like to ride a horse. I said yes. He motioned a horse nearby and told me to mount it. I explained that I did not know how to ride one. Soon someone came with a horse on a leash and told me to mount and led me around the camp! At dinner time a local Kyrgyz guide who probably didn't work for the camp told me and other foreign guests that the middle name of Kyrgyz people was hospitality. It was not an over-statement. Before I met Nazira, I thought for someone who had probably cornered the market it must be a big and burly man. My sexist stereotype was shattered when I finally met her.She was gentle and down-to-earth. When I asked about the bill, she had this expression of nonchalance as if she had forgotten about it until I reminded her. Having read the reviews here,I estimated the amount beforehand and asked her if it was right. She said sure in a casual way and even wanted to give me change. It was much less than I had expected so I refused the change. I have a typical city-dweller mentality. I put locks on my backpack because I had robberies in previous trips.Locals would look at the locks with confusion and seemed offended.I also use a money belt.Just before I arrived when I was in Cholpon-Ata,I pulled the zipper too hard and the knob came out. A kind old lady put it back for me and told me to go to a seamtress nearby to have it sewn back which I did. She charged me only a very small fee. Although I have only been there for a very short time,I dare say that people there lead a simple and pure life in unison with nature. Nazira was pregnant at the time.I wrote this to congratulate her and wish her and her new born the best.Your kindness will come back many times over. Also I would like to thank the French girl who gave me a lift to Naryn.Merci beaucoup:)

Ala-Archa Gorge

Reviewed By 51RuthR - Cape Town Central, South Africa

It took about 45 minutes to reach the national park from Bishkek and the drive was just glorious, passing through open fields and small villages with a backdrop of high snow covered mountains. Many herds of horses scattered the hillsides grazing and frolicking and some cattle and sheep. Once inside the park there are many paths to follow for hiking or walking and the scenery is just breathtaking. There was a local Kyrgyz man with a huge black eagle which I found fascinating and had a picture taken with it on my hand (inside a glove). Hunting with eagles is commonly practised today in Kyrgyzstan and there is an annual competition for this sport. I can highly recommend a visit to this magnificent national park.

I know the southern side of the lake is wilder, but I travelled from Balykchy to Tamchy on the northern side - the idea being to relax in a smaller place and swim a lot. It's quite something swimming in August in crystal-clear water with snow-covered peaks on both sides of the lake!

Song Kol Lake

Reviewed By karthik01061995 - Frankfurt, Germany

After an incognito 2020, i decided to do something adventurous in 2021 and wow what i start i had in Kyrgyzstan. I flew to Bishkek 0n 2nd feb and decided to visit places which are famous in summer but inaccessible by conventional ways in winter. My goal was to ride to the top of the song kul lake on a horse in a snowy and a bit dangerous mountain path. To fullfil my goal, i met with Aman, the owner of Kyrgyz riders (+996558033880). It took us 2 days to reach the top of the lake and the journey was mind blowing and hands down the best experience of my life !. The path was covered with snow and we had to often get down the horses to navigate them without stepping on ice which would break the horse leg ! The crisp winter breeze turned to extreme wind with temperatures well below negative 10 C. we had to climb over a mountain pass 3400 meters above sea level. The path after the pass was extraordinary and straight out of pictures i have seen of antartica ! wow what an experience it was! the lake was frozen and the ice thickness was well above 1.5 meters. if you can carry your skies along with you, it would be a great experience to ski there ! and best of all i was the ONLY tourist there !!!! can you believe it haha because in summer i think more than 100 K people visit this place !. Thank you Aman and Kyrgyz riders for such an amazing experience. Kyrgyz riders (+996558033880).
