August 8, 2021 Jeremy Dunfee

Nazare, named after the Biblical “Nazareth” in the 4th century, is Portugal’s most famous fishing village, now becoming important as well in the world of big wave, tow-in surfing. The tallest wave ever recorded being surfed – by a Hawaiian big-wave surfer – was off Nazare.

Forte de Sao Miguel

Went to Nazare in May which is not big wave season but still got a thrill from just looking out from the cliffs and imagining what the sight and sound must be when an eighty foot wave roars into that coastline. The Fort is a nice walk out to the point and the small exhibit inside has some surfing memorabilia as well as a great relief map explaining how these swells end up so big. The town and regular beach are worth the visit also.

It's a short trip that take you from top to bottom Nazare cliff. It's totally worth the value (2.90 round trip) as it's more an urban service that a turistic one. But it's great to travel on it!
