The largest national park in Spain, Sierra Nevada is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. The rugged terrain includes mountains and gorges made for hiking (Los Cahorros is a favorite with its limestone cliffs and hanging bridges), icy plunge pools for swimming, and plentiful tunnels and caves to explore. Those that aren’t so adventure-inclined can make their own excitement roaming through the many villages dotted throughout Las Alpujarras. The famous Alhambra castle and fortress is also close by, inspiring visitors with its breathtaking architecture and gardens.

The team were amazing in the lead up to our visit: helping with search for accommodation that suited our needs and giving a variety of options; organising our lift passes which meant that we could easily pick them up at the equipment rental shop the night before. Working in tandem with The British Ski Center to cater for our varying skills and lesson requests was easy and effective. Shout out to Laura (Sierra Essence) for her communication and organisation, Kristel for organisation of the lessons and Jonathan, Tash, and Giles for their professionalism in delivering the sessions. I am lost for words at how much the learners in our family improved in a small amount of time!

Las Alpujarras

Andalusia's mountainous Alpujarra region features Spain's highest peak, Mulhacén, rising to a height of 3,478 meters. It provides perhaps the best walking and hiking country in Andalucia and boasts many picturesque villages for the less adventurous traveler.

Last year, at the end of September we spent 5 days walking in the Alpujarras region. We visited Lanjaron, a spa centre, where we stayed in the hotel ESPANA. Also went to Treveléz, well-known for its mouthwatering curred ham jamon serrano. The village of Treveléz is the highest in mainland Spain, at 1,486m. The best of best was "Walk 6128": CAPILEIRA-BUBIÓN-PAMPANEIRA length: 3.8miles. It was a lovely sunny day, stunning views and amazing white villages.

Los Cahorros

We hiked this on our own a few weeks after the area had received heavy rain. The river was high, the path was muddy near the village and slick in many spots. We had a blast negotiating our way up the gorge. This trail is not for anyone who struggles to crawl, or scamper along a cement wall holding onto metal grabs. There are multiple areas where you have to do both and I was glad the river wasn't any higher or we would have had difficulty in a few spots where you have to climb down into the river and step along the cement wall to stay on the trail. You'll want your hands free and good hiking shoes. When we got to the top of the trail we took a road around the edge of the canyon back into the village. This was not a interesting or as pretty as the gorge. If you have time you may want to go back along the river.

Its more than 107kms of skiable terrain make Sierra Nevada one of the largest resorts in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, making Sierra Nevada one of the preferred destinations for all lovers of skiing.

Sierra Nevada was a great experience. The infrastructure is working very well. Parking in a huge public garage located right under the central part of Sierra Nevada. Many hotels and restaurants are within convenient walking distance from the garage and so are the ski rental shops and also the efficient skilifts. The ski area offers great skiing for all kind of skiers aswell as nice restaurants with both indoor and outdoor seeting.
