10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Sardinia That You Shouldn't Miss

March 8, 2022 Agatha Simes

The second-largest island in Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia serves up a lovely blend of sea, sand and history. Thousands of nuraghe (stone buildings) dot the landscape, proof that people have been enjoying the lovely climate here for millennia. From posh Costa Smerelda in the north to medieval Alghero in the northwest to the lively capital of Cagliari in the south, and with many picturesque towns and unspoiled sandy beaches in between, Sardinia’s got a little something for everyone.

We were only here for wine tasting so the review is not on the hotel and food. We came by this place for an organised wine tasting that lasted about 1 hour. Call in advance to reserve and check the times for the tasting. For 17 eur we got to tase 4 wines, cheese and charcuterie and olive oil. The woman gave a very good explanation of the vineyard, how they work, the region and the wines. A very nice tasting and some of the wines I likes the most in the region. This place is a small producer which makes the experince very nice. Very good value for money on their wines and olive oil. Only complaint is that they could not ship bottles abroad so I could not buy as much as I wanted... recommended!

Museo dell'Arte Mineraria

The Iglesiente is one of the most important mining areas in Italy, especially for lead, zinc and silver minerals. The development of the mining industry and the need for qualified personnel led to the foundation of the Mining School in Iglesias in 1871. In 1934 the students were engaged into excavating some tunnels in the basement of the school. In the Museum of Mining Art, the APIMMG (Mining Surveyors & Mining Geotechnicians Association) has recreated some typical environments and displayed a collection of mining tools and machinery, original laboratory equipment, models used for educational purposes in the school and a huge quantity of archival documents and photographs. By walking through the galleries and visiting the exhibitions under the guidance of the Association experts, everyone can experience unique sensations and get a deeper insight into the human, social and scientific aspects of the mining era in Iglesiente .

I had an amazing experience! I was not expecting that this museum would offer a full immersion in the life, work, and struggles of the miners. The museum was originally a mining school. In contains a mine at the lower level that was carved by the students at the beginning of the century. The mine was also a refuge for the inhabitants during the war. Mattia was my guide. He is a gifted storyteller and brought to life for me the life and tribulations of the miners. I felt myself welling up a few times. Highly recommended.

Fabulous experience very near Olbios. Excellent tour & extremely friendly. Informative with every part of the process explained well. Charming hostess inviting any questions we had. The 3 different wines to taste were paired with pecorino cheese & salami another type. Each wine was introduced starting with the white wine. We loved the wine preserve. However we purchased a couple of jars of prickly pear jam. My daughter bought a bottle of wine. Easy location to find & would recommend this highly. Best to book/reserve places in advance so they are prepared for visitors. We loved this place. I’d go again.

Our visit happened on a rainy day, and we were not expecting an exciting visit from the museum located in this quiet corner of Sardegna - wow! We were confronted with a very friendly guide, and an involving story of ancient cultures and their open attitude towards each other. We discovered many interesting details of the life lead hundreds of years b.C. and left our visit inspired and happy - definitely a must-see for anyone who is travelling in this area of Sardegna! Small bonus: there is a very friendly cat who follows around along with the guided tour, and who enjoys cuddles. Thank you to the attentive and welcoming staff of the museum!

This open-air market in Sardinia's principal city is noisy, busy, colorful and lots of fun.

Loved this place - sights, smells, bustle, amazing food! Mix with the locals and spend a fraction of what you would in a restaurant .. we loved buying up lots of little portions of Salami, breads and cheeses (you can also try first !). The seafood market is out of this world.. market sellers very friendly and patient with our rubbish Italian and will throw in a freebie or bargain. Great for photographers too!

The Sanctuary is small and really beautiful, Gothic Aragonese in style. You are immediately attracted by the statue of Our Lady of Bonaria, which arrived in Sardinia in a very adventurous way in 1370. There is a special atmosphere in the Sanctuary. The Basilica was built in 1704 and is used on Saturdays and Sundays and for special events. The location is perfect to enjoy a great view.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari

The Archaeological Museum is part of the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari, a MiC institute with special autonomy since 2019. The Museum is located in the ancient Castello district within the Citadel of Museums which was built between 1956 and 1979 designed by architects Libero Cecchini and Piero Gazzola with the recovery of the royal arsenal and medieval walls. The archaeological collection includes over 4,000 artifacts that tell a long history of almost 7,000 years, from prehistoric times to the early Middle Ages, from Neolithic mother goddesses to Nuragic bronzes, from Phoenician and Punic jewels to Byzantine cult objects.

Museum covers everything in Sardinia from Neolithic age (brilliant carved statues from 6,000years BC) through Bronze Age (Nuraghic period), to Roman times. It has descriptions in italian and english. Our favourite pieces were the Neolithic statues and tools, the amazing giant statues (Giganti Di Prama) and Bronzetti (beautiful small Bronze statues) from the Nuraghic Bronze age, the stele from 800yrs BC with the first example of Western writing, the Roman jewelry and roof tiles recovered from a sunken ship. We went on a quiet day off-peak and had the place to ourselves. We spent 3hrs there, and still needed to go back another day. Only down side, there is no cafe, just a drinks machine.
