Yanaka District

oh how I love this area! this area is an easy walk to reach from JR Nippori Station. An area where many small shrines and traditional houses are easy to find. You can find many art/craft stores, restaurants, souvenirs shops along the street and many offer reasonable prices. Had late lunch in one small restaurant with Tripadvisor certificate stickers and it was great food. This area is full with small shops and tradisional houses and it was a nice afternoon strolling. You can relax and enjoy and forget about the busy Tokyo in Yanaka

Yanaka Cemetery

We walked through this cemetery on our way to Tennoji Temple and Yanaka Ginza street. It is expansive with a lot of small paths/trails to walk down. It was interesting to see the diversity of markers/memorials throughout the cemetery. There were some sites that had not been visited for a long time while others were pristine. It was a peaceful walk to the Temple.

Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street

Quieter and quaint looking town in Tokyo which you should not miss! It’s a small shopping street near to ueno area has very good food offered there. Didn’t get a chance to try their mains like ramen, sushi or beef as we have already tried most of it near Tokyo station. However, we managed to try their famous beef patty. The shop do not have any English words and hence I just followed the local Japanese ladies and selected the popular choice. My gosh, I instantly fell in love with the piping hot delicious beef patty ever! It taste extra good especially when the weather was so cold! Next, we tried that Takoyaki from a small shop in one of the lanes. Initially I thought they would be cold especially when it was already prepared and sitting on the trays. Lo and behold, I took my first bite and it scalded my mouth! The takoyaki balls were crispy on the outside and piping hot and soft in the inside. The sauce was awesome coupled with their usual condiments which made it the best I have ever tried! For something fun, the staircase to enter the shopping street from the train station resembles the staircase from the ‘Joker’ movie. If you are daring, you can mimic Joker with his dance moves down the stairs. I am sure some Japanese will find it interesting and start snapping pics of you. Could share this as that was what one lady did when my husband had decided to do the dance! Anyways, no one knows us. Just relax and have fun!

Tennoji Temple

Reviewed By erikoh303 - Manila, Philippines

Tennoji Temple wasn't in my plans; I just let the YaNeSen walk surprise me whatever I can find. Tennoji Temple is the first part of the YaNeSen walk, together with Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street and Yanaka Cemetery. Unlike Sensoji Temple in Asakusa that is full of people, Tennoji Temple has less visitors. My first impression of Tennoji Temple is that the bronze Buddha resembles that of Kamakura, but smaller. As a traveller who loves religious sites, Tennoji Temple is a good place to pray and to have quiet time. This part of Tokyo is worth the visit! Tennoji Temple is my favorite Buddhist temple, and one of the oldest temples in Japan!
