Marytown - The National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe

Beautiful, Holy Shrine! I went to retreats here when I was younger and they shaped me like no other experience. I am so thankful for the work of the friars and volunteers here. Someone mentioned that it's "boring"- lets be clear, this is a Catholic Church and not an amusement park- but what is "boring" about the Savior of the world being made present in the Eucharist and in Adoration? Please God fill our hearts for love of You and especially the gift of your Holy Presence in the Eucharist!

Genesee Theatre

The historic Genesee Theatre is a 2,400 seat entertainment venue located in Waukegan, Illinois. Located along the northern shore of Lake Michigan between Chicago and Milwaukee, the Genesee Theatre is a hub of activity for Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Hosting a variety of music, comedy, and dance, the Genesee marks Waukegan as a destination for high-quality entertainment once reserved for major cities. The Genesee was built in 1927 as a vaudeville stage and movie palace before being restored in 2004 to its modern glory as a live entertainment venue boasting one of the largest stages in the Midwest, an acoustically dynamic auditorium, and a beautifully restored grand lobby for intimate and elegant events.

Market Square

Reviewed By illinoistravelere

Normally my review would spotlight the shopping/dining aspects of Market Square. However, with pretty much everything closed in keeping with COVID 19 guidelines, I thought I'd focus on the walking-around-whilst-keeping-a-safe-distance aspects of this interesting destination/photo op. Designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, it is often considered the first planned shopping center in the United States. It features commercial/residential buildings around a central green lawn square. There is a fountain at the east end and a 1917 flag pole memorial to WWII soldiers at the west. There are shops on the first level and apartments above. The fountain statue, "Friends," by Sylvia Shaw Judson, Shaw's daughter, was erroneously identified as "Girl with Baby on Shoulder," until 2016 when a plaque with the correct name was installed. Shaw's design included a plethora of architectural elements such as carved wooden beams, gabled roofs, clock towers, stucco walls, sundial, weather vane, and so on in an eclectic English/Flemish/Bavarian/Baroque/Palladian/Renaissance style. The prime location, in the center building at the head of the square (directly opposite the train station) was originally filled by the First National Bank. In 1931 Marshall Field's took over the space with its very first branch location. In 2008 new owner Macy's closed it. The History Center of Lake Forest - Lake Bluff has an online collection of photos and postcards of Market Square from its construction to the present day. Market Square gets 5 stars for being the perfect backdrop for a leisurely spring stroll during these pace-and-space-yourself-carefully days. There is pull-in, two-hour-limit parking around the square. See my June 26, 2016 review for more details.

A few updates to my June 2, 2018 and June 22, 2014 reviews: The admission prices are the same as they were in 2014 -- $8 for adults, and $12 for children ages 2 - 12. If you don't have a stroller/buggy/pram, you can rent a two-child wagon for $2. You can purchase good-sized hay feed bags for $1 each. I'm going to mention a number of animals on view at the Lambs. You can skip the next two paragraphs, but I'm including this information so that you can prepare your children in advance for what they will be seeing. I am of the "that's what my phone is for" school of instant research, but you may want to do some getting-ready reading. There is very little signage on site. The Discovery Center is filled with interesting inhabitants: ferrets, quail, hedgehogs (Lt. Dan, a rescue African pygmy, lost his hind legs to frostbite), snakes (don't miss the albino violet corn snake), lizards (including a one-year-old docile Tegu lizard), guinea pigs, lovebirds, parakeets, chinchilla, rats, iguana, etc. The resident cockatoo, Charlie, and the blue macaw are in the garden and pet center. And, of course, barnyard cats are everywhere. The outdoor exhibits include ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, goats, sheep, llamas, a camel, horses, ponies (including a mini dwarf pony),cows, and my favourite -- pigs, one of which was blissfully cooling off in a mud bath when we visited. I have never seen a pig wallow before and it was fascinating. Warning -- don't get too close. I was spared, but the woman next to me ended up not so blissfully trying to get the mud off her hot pink outfit. There is a farm-themed miniature golf course. The train and merry-go-round might be under maintenance, but the admission price will be adjusted if they are. There are a few new souvenirs for sale at the entrance, but I'd walk over to the Cedar Chest thrift shop -- which has a full room of toys, art supplies, books, games, puzzles, dolls, stuffed animals, etc. There is also an alcove with school and office supplies. The prices are very reasonable, and you'll be supporting the mission of the Lambs organization -- "Helping people with developmental disabilities lead productive, happy lives and connecting with the human spirit in us all." Although there are a number of family restaurants in nearby Libertyville and Mundelein, you might want to visit the Lambs fully-stocked Snack Shop with its covered picnic table area. You can get sandwiches, drinks, ice cream, etc. There is a portable toilet by the carousel, and restrooms across the parking lot near the snack shop. You can spend a couple of memorable, kid-friendly hours here. convenient to the tollway
