Conrad-Caldwell House Museum (Conrad's Castle)

The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum is a historic, Victorian mansion located in the heart of Old Louisville on St. James Court. It is one of the finest examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and was the masterpiece of famed local architect Arthur Loomis of Clarke & Loomis. Surrounded by a beautiful courtyard neighborhood at the center of the largest collection of Victorian Homes in the US, "Conrad's Castle" featured all the latest innovations of its day, including interior plumbing and electric lighting. Known for its beautiful woodwork and parquet floors, this massive Bedford limestone home, covered with gargoyles, beautiful archways, and elaborate stone designs, incorporated 7 types of hardwoods and magnificent stained glass windows in the interior design, making it one of the most stunning homes in Old Louisville. The Museum has been lovingly restored to the Edwardian Age, housing a massive collection of period items including many original pieces.

Beth Caldwell, a great granddaughter of the second owner of the home, led our tour and it was the best home tour I have ever done, due in large part to her engaging personality and personal stories! The framing woodwork and staircase, as well as the different parquet flooring pattern in each room are remarkable examples of craftsmanship from the past. Seeing the Acousticon (a hearing aid from the early 1900s) which Grace used, her life size doll, a sewing machine from the era, mechanical pencils and tools used by the Caldwell men, the large hidden wall safe, and more were all interesting. The exterior is constructed of limestone, and with its indoor plumbing and electric light bulbs, it was one of the most remarkable homes of its day! It is a treasure to have such a beautifully preserved home to tour in Louisville.

St Mary's Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption

We recently moved to the area and had seen this beautiful church which reminded me of Notre Dame. We stopped on a Monday morning to walk through. While it isn't on the size scale of most Western European churches I've visited, it is equally impressive, especially the stained glass windows. We were surprised at what a phenomenally beautiful cathedral, which reminded us of Europe, could be found in Covington. It is indeed a treasure. The marble along with the intricate mosaics from Germany pair well with the Venetian glass and make this a must see if you are in Northern Kentucky.

We enjoyed both tours we completed at Claiborne Farms. We did the walking tour that included seeing the breeding program facilities and seeing several stallions. Our guide shared lots of information about the stallion business as well as about individual stallions. We loved being able to see them up close when he brought Kentucky Derby winner Orb out of his stall and War Front for us to have pictures taken with them or feed them a peppermint. Well worth our time and money! In the afternoon we did the Farm shuttle tour of the back part of the farm. We got to see daily operations and the beautiful grounds as well as mares, weaklings, and the “grandmas” who live their life out on this beautiful farm. Our guide was knowledgeable and answered any and all questions. Great Day!

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is a landmark destination rooted in the spirit of the Kentuckians that called this place home for more than a century. Discover inspiring legacies, fresh-air adventures and spirited hospitality throughout Shaker Village's 3,000 acres. Onsite amenities include overnight accommodations, dining and catering services, retail shops, historical exhibitions and tours, a farm and garden area, a nature preserve, multi-use trail system, riverboat rides, equestrian stable and an extensive calendar of special programs, activities and events.

Reviewed By bradwN9107IR - Winchester, United States

I recently toured Shaker Village along with the family. I came expecting a simple little historic village, but found oh so much more. The centerpiece of this attraction is obviously the meticulously restored remains of the former Shaker Village, but it also sets on 2,500 acres of multiple purpose land. Let me start by saying that this site contains WAY more than you could see in a day trip, but thankfully almost every building on the property has rooms serving as a bed and breakfast (I'm definitely planning a return weekend stay). The village itself will take 3-6 hours to tour, as you make your way through amazing historical buildings with artifacts. When you're done with that, the property includes miles and miles of hiking trails, places to ride horses, a working farm to tour/see, and even a riverboat you can ride. There's also a great little restaurant on the property, which is also located in one of the historic buildings.
