Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center

Designed by renowned architect Stanley Tigerman, the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center is one of Chicagoland's premier attractions. The Museum uses lessons from the Holocaust to focus attention on contemporary issues of genocide, intolerance, and inhumanity at home and worldwide.

Reviewed By tosl - Jersey City, United States

Other than DC, this is the most powerful and comprehensive museum I have seen on the Holocaust outside of visiting the camps themselves. An easy 20-minute drive from Chicago, this should not be near the top of any itinerary, this should be the top site. Excellent job to the curator and staff - very moving.

AMAZING! Larry Kanfer’s skill and body of work has been compared to Ansel Adams’ with good reason. His photographs take the ordinary and show us the extraordinary beauty of nature. His ability to show the beauty in the everyday scenery with his prairiescapes is a gift in particular to Midwesterners. Beyond the prairiescapes, University of Illinois and Chicago photographs, a visit to the gallery is a chance to see Kanfer’s international work which is equally stunning. The artist himself, because his work is true artistry, is gracious with his time and very welcoming.

River Bend Gallery

Exclusive home to Geoffrey Mikol's Nature scape photography. His artwork is stunning, catching elusive light that the eye sees but that cameras often miss. He has a talent for capturing moments in nature that still the soul and quiet your senses.

Our first trip to Galena and the River Bend Gallery was definitely a highlight! The images Geoffrey captures with his camera are breathtaking and we had a hard time choosing what we wanted to bring home. They have so many options. What we wanted wasn't in stock and they made it for us that night and we were able to pick it up the next morning! We were lucky enough to meet the photographer and tell him how much we loved his work. A must stop!

Chicago Cultural Center

The Chicago Cultural Center is the nation's first free municipal cultural center and one of the most visited attractions in Chicago. The stunning landmark building, opened in 1897 as the city's first public library, is home to two magnificent stained-glass domes, and annually presents hundreds of free cultural exhibits and performances. Admission is free.

Reviewed By pookala - Philadelphia, United States

Aside from being a beautiful building filled with finely executed mosaic work, a lovely marble staircase and an always interesting array of changing exhibits; the Cultural Center also has a free weekly recital under the largest Tiffany glass dome in the world. The 45 minute Wednesday concerts take place in the Preston Bradley Hall at 12:15 pm. Be sure to get there early (20-30 minutes) if you want to sit up front. The space fills up quickly. If you have nothing planned afterwards go to the Randolph St entrance after the concert and go on a tour of the building. Space is limited for this tour and they start at 1:15 pm daily. Check out their calendar of events before planning your Chicago itinerary to take advantage of this excellent cultural institution.

The French Market is the perfect place to stroll on Saturday morning, pick up some fresh produce and baked goods, some flowers, and a coffee and maybe a baked good or two. Also craft jewelry, hot sauces, and other interesting sundries. Love checking it out with our family.

Woodfield Mall

Surround yourself with fashion, food, and fun with the most distinctive collection of shopping, dining and entertainment. Woodfield has the finest collection of department stores and specialty shops in the Great Lakes region including Nordstrom, Macy's, Lord & Taylor, jcpenney, Sears and nearly 300 stores and restaurants.

Reviewed By MeBlonde - Chicago, United States

Woodfield has always been a mall to visit once or twice a year as it is pretty far from my home. Besides the mall, there are a lot of good stores in the area as well as great restaurants so you can wander after the mall. As to going to the mall during this time, I felt all the cleaning precautions are being met, everyone in masks and plenty of stuff to buy. JC Penny, Macy's and Nordstrom are the main anchors and Lord and Taylor still there with going out of business sale signs everywhere. Most stores seem to go out of their way to keep customers safe by limiting the number of people in the stores. Sorry to see the Garret's closed but many other sweet bakery shops available as well as several coffee shops. This is a very big mall so if you are looking for a specific store would suggest you check on line to find out where the store is so you don't waste time looking for it. A couple of stores closed, but not many. Would shop again, if I was in the area.
