Orn's Bookshop

Reviewed By skyisblu - Montreal, Canada

On a walk back to our hotel, we notice a small sign advertising "USED BOOKS" just right of the entrance to Wat Jet Yod, and decide to investigate. Following a whole series of these signs, we find ourselves down a quiet alley near the Mercy Hostel, meeting the owner, a German man who is carefully holding on to the last bastion of paper literature in Chiang Rai. He explains how he used to do a lot of business, especially with an excellent trade-in policy, and dealt with travellers looking to buy and sell those heavy guidebooks to all the Southeast Asian countries. With the advent and subsequent popularity of the internet, GPS and good data plans, people don't carry all the added weight anymore, and his only business now is the expat community, to which he's become more of a lending library. He figures one day, he too will be forced to close up shop. The shop is a whole series of small rooms, stacked floor to ceiling with every imaginable type of book, from history to travel to fiction, passing by language dictionaries and picture books. There is a healthy dose of French, German and several other language books mixed in for good measure. It is a a veritable Alibaba's cavern of used literature, and deserves more attention from travelers passing through town - everyone travels with one good book, and this is the place to swap it out for something new. If you happen to be in Chiang Rai anytime soon, you need to make this a stop on your trip: dive deep into the cavernous spaces, books piled from floor to ceiling, messages and quotes and maps lining every vacant space, and lose yourself for awhile. Likely, you will resurface with a new tome in hand, ready to distract you on that next 12-hour bus ride. And the owner is always sitting outside, chatting with friends, ready to make a deal. It's a great little space - you should go.

Prataap Jai

As an art gallery, tea house, cultural, art and movement educational center, and small store theater, we aim to provide a clear alternative environment to the typical “bar scene” which is often the place where foreigners interact with Thais. The goal of our work is to enable cross-cultural exchange among foreigners and Thais; to provide a place where foreigners and locals can meet and learn from one another in positive, productive and creative ways. Our love for the life style these products come from can also be felt in the decor of our Home Stay.Through sharing our traditional Lanna ways of life with our Home Stay guests and by using authentic textiles and fabrics to make our clothing and products in our shop we hope to teach Thailand and the world at large about the uniqueness and beauty of our local culture. We wish to produce a high quality product which will be recognized by and can appeal to both Thai clientele and a larger world wide market. We will encourage and support production process of local handicraft products such as hilltribe products and Tai products. In addition to designing and manufacturing our merchandise, we also work closely with the indigenous tribes of Thailand, and other Thai locals in order to encourage and support the authenticity of the local art forms that garment and handicraft making entail. We will bring some original product to be modify in order to meet customer’s need and easy to use in everyday’s life. While keeping with tradition and what is culturally appropriate we also have a responsibility to our customers to ensure our products meet their needs and are easy to use in everyday life. Doi Din Dang Pottery

Maybe 30 people work here. Spectacular large pots, beautiful glazes, large grounds, worth a visit, slightly out of the ordinary a few km off the highway north

Reviewed By PhilMalone - Footscray, Australia

This pottery business is open to the public complete with a few little shops of sales (including one cottage containing discounted items of pottery that have slight imperfections) and a great coffee shop with cakes. It is set in trees and lots of shade and very peaceful to hear the birds singing and soft music playing as you sip on your coffee (there is no tea) and browse lots of pottery for sale. This is well worth a visit, even if you don't intend to buy pottery.
