10 Private Tours in Puno That You Shouldn't Miss

September 3, 2021 Fernanda Pittenger

Llamas, sheep and alpacas roam the plains of Puno, a port city in southeastern Peru. Their fleeces are used to make the area’s signature textiles, which make excellent souvenirs. You’ll do a lot of walking here, as many of the streets are too steep for cars. But the climbs are worth it for the excellent views of Lake Titicaca. Take a boat to the Floating Islands or get up close and personal with the four-legged locals at a llama farm.

We had 2 nights in the Amazon at Amazona Posadas. We packed in a lot to very little time. The lodge was beautiful and very comfortable, food was excellent. Our guide was very good but seemed a bit disinterested at times. Very knowledgeable. We then went to Cusco, had a walking tour and cooking class. Our new guide, Albero was excellent. Our cooking class with Jesus was fun, very accommodating. We then moved on to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Highly recommend the hike at MP Mountain. Our guide was very supportive and patient! Next we then went to the Rainbow Mountain. Unfortunately, though I requested we NOT go to Vinicunca, that is where we were taken. It was very beautiful, but very crowded. I did not understand why we did not go to Palcoyo. Was told later it was not accessible due to landslides. This may have been the case, but was unhappy about the lack of transparency prior to embarking. Overall, we were very happy with our experience and grateful to have completed it before the travel restrictions were set in place for the COVID pandemic.

I'm not sure if there were better things to see, but the ride around the city was fun. Seemed like we hit the hot spots, other than the Plaza de Armas. Not extremely impressed, but it was a good way to drive around and see the city. The stops were pretty good.

After the travel quarantine went into effect, tour options in Puno disappeared. Thanks to Maria at Pacha Expeditions, I was able to enjoy a private, custom tour to La Isla de Uros. With a private boat taxi, we toured the Rio Wily and stopped at various islands learning about the native Aymara culture that exists on these islands. Maria and boat driver, Joel, both provided excellent guide services and a wealth of information on the local people. I would highly recommend the services of Maria and Pacha Expeditions for anyone interested in exploring Aymara culture in the Puno and the local Altiplano area.????

The portal of Amaru Muru, also known as "Hayu Marca" or "Willka Uta", is a mystical and energetic place that exists near Lake Titicaca. An altar carved in a single piece of rock over 5 meters, surrounded by a very particular landscape and the point of reference of many mystical visitors. We will make a stop in Chucuito, a colonial town that houses remains of the "Temple of Fertility" or "Inca Uyo". The door of Amaru Muru is located inside some very curious rock formations ("Forest of stones"), it is a place of meditation for travelers. Peru was a region of successive civilizations since the emergence of Caral-Supe in 3200 BC. C.17 The Inca Empire was the last autochthonous or indigenous state, which dominated a large part of the South American west towards the fifteenth century. The conquest of the Incario was followed by the next century, after which the territory was configured as a viceroyalty of the Spanish Empire   Bolivia In its territory, ancient civilizations such as Tiwanaku, the Hydraulic Culture of Las Lomas and the Moxeña culture developed. First the Incas and later the Spanish conquerors dominated the territory until the country became independent in 1825. Having developed the traditions with a miscegenation of pre-Columbian cultures with Spanish culture, is a multi-ethnic and pluricultural country, rich in mixture and syncretism of customs and traditions received from the indigenous peoples and the Spanish conquerors
