10 Outdoor Activities in Valle Central That You Shouldn't Miss

October 30, 2021 Nobuko Falco

Chile's Valle Central, a verdant valley tucked between the Andes and the coastal mountain ranges, has a mild climate and moist soil perfect for grape growing. Made up of four distinct wine regions, Maipo, Rapel, Curico and Maule, the area is criss-crossed by well-traveled wine roads. At the northern end of the valley is Maipo, the oldest of Chile's wine regions, famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon. At the opposite end is Maule, which still grows Pais, the first grape brought to South America.

Valle Nevado - Ski Resort Chile

Valle Nevado is South America's premier ski resort, offering access to the largest amount of terrain and the most modern lift system on the continent. The Valle Nevado complex provides a complete experience, including boutique shops, three hotels, private apartments, six restaurants, a full-service spa and fitness center, cinema, library, bars and lounges, a pub with live music, a kids entertainment center and a state-of-the-art events venue, all set to the breathtaking backdrop of the magnificent Andes. Located just 90 minutes from Santiago, Valle Nevado offers 2,200 acres of varied terrain, and 17 lifts including the country's only gondola. Due to the resort's orientation and altitude at 9,924 feet, Valle Nevado on average receives the most snow of Central Valley resorts, with a seasonal average of 300+ inches. Short lift lines and few people on the slopes provides days of powder skiing after a storm. The resort has a terrain park, plenty of side and backcountry terrain, and guests spending 7 nights at the resort receive 2 interconnect tickets to neighboring resorts, opening a staggering 7,000 acres of terrain. The adventurous can book heli-skiing directly at the resort, a truly spectacular experience with vertical drops of up to 5,000 feet in one run. The 2017 season runs from June 23 to September 22. Join the resort for the 2nd Annual Chile Wine Festival from Aug. 18 - 24.

There's this company called "Phenix" that has special offers for groups of a minimum of 13 (at least during the weekends) where for 51.000 you get transport, a ticket for the day, equipment rental, lunch and ski/snowboard lessons (different levels). It's supposed to be for people under 24 but I've added some people around 27 to the groups in the past without a problem. On weekdays you get cheaper packages because you get to include less things. Anyway, in my opinion this is the best ski centre in Santiago if you're looking into not-so-crowded slopes and like to go fast. There is the fastest chairlift in South America (called Andes Express) which leads you to the mountain top in 5 minutes.

Buin Zoo

We came here to take a look at the zoo, which was originally founded for the rescued animals (from circus, etc.) and enjoyed the time spent here. It's an early spring time here in Chile and therefore the place wasn't crowded at all. Some animals, due to the low temperature, were inside their shelters, so we couldn't see them (e.g., a panther, some turtles under maternity leave) The administration performs some reparation works and we would like to come back in summer to take a look at the results :) A show with sea creatures is highly recommended!!! - it's funny, and children were amazed and learned some facts about the sea dogs and penguins. Also, don't miss a chance to buy some funny stuff at the store close to the exit for your kids and for your memories.:)

Playa Punta de Lobos

Reviewed By SophiaK - Athens, Greece

Driving from Colchagua valley we drove through vineyards and thick forests of pine and eucalyptus trees passing some small villages along the way and street vendors selling strawberries, water melons and other summer fruits. Pichilemu was packed with traffic and it took us approximately 30 minutes to get through. But Punta de lobos really paid us off. The spot has an amazing view, unbelievable cliffs with various birds flying around, the waves crushing on the rocks, the sandy beach full of people (although it was a bitty chilly) and the surfers in a constant “fight” with the waves. Although it was an overcast day one could only imagine how much more beautiful this place would be on a sunny day!
