10 Other Outdoor Activities in Madeira That You Shouldn't Miss

May 12, 2022 Trinity Boughner

Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

Levada Faja do Rodrigues

One of the best levadas that we have walked over the years with stunning views across the valley and down to Sao Vicente. Access is via a 200 metre track from the E104 above Sao Vicente and you can go either side along the Levada as it’s crosses the track.. We went towards the right and walked for about 40 minutes to the tunnel passing waterfalls, high cliffs and large trees along the way. At each turn there are lovely views across the valley or up into the hills behind. There were quite a few birds around as well as small fish swimming in the leveda. We turned around at the long tunnel as we only had a mobile phone flashlight and the path was quite narrow. It’s worth going further if you have the right equipment and a bit of courage! All helped by a lovely sunny afternoon.....

From the parking lot you follow a path that goes up to the viewpoint. It takes about 10 minutes to get there. You have a good view at the Valley of the Nuns and the surrounding mountains. At the parking lot is a restaurant with facilities.

Beautiful beach, great location within the bay so the tide isn’t too rough to swim like in other parts of the island.

Levada Da Serra Do Faial

Reviewed By peterannelies - Scotland, United Kingdom

We were staying at Valle Paraizo close to Camacha and close to this levada; so it was our first and second walks - in different directions. On the second trip (towards choupana from valle paraizo) we combined it with a return walk on the lower levada dos tornos. These stretches were easy walking, level (of course) along the dry levada, and passed through trees and around valleys - with good views down to the sea and across the little villages and communities. We thoroughly enjoyed it. There is good bus access at valle paraizo and camacha; at choupana we saw a taxi hoping for passengers and walked down beneath the football stadium to another road that does have bus service into Funchal. Nice and close to Funchal; no tunnels or dangerous drops in the parts we did. We downloaded the walkme app to help track progress and where to get on and off the levada.

Pocas Do Gomes/Doca Do Cavacas

Reviewed By Fish_McFish - Birmingham, United Kingdom

We passed this place on a walk from Camara Do Lobos to Praia Formosa and decided to go back (using the Yellow Bus!) for a day of kicking back and maybe a swim. It's set in an area of natural rock pools and looks great. It's also a lot cheaper than the main Lido, at about 8.60Euro for 2 beds and an umbrella (with entrance too). My partner set herself up off to the side and I went off for a swim in one of the rock pools (taking my underwater camera and a snorkel). The water is cold, and does take some getting used to (unless you're a local who just throws themself in off seemingly any surface!) However once you are in it is crystal clear and clean. Well worth a good while to snorkel around the main pool, and you might get lucky and see a baby shark (they don't bite, and I certainly never saw it even try!). There's several types of, mostly, small fish, but compared to snorkeling in Greece (Or even Pacific side of Mexico!) this was paradise! Later on we popped out for some lunch and a drink, but we made the mistake of having a couple of Ponchas. Once back at the pool I thought I'd try the sea part, I couldn't even get in due to it being rougher than it looks and colder than I expected, I ended up slicing one of my fingers on the rocks, so be careful! That said if you don't drink Poncha before attempting to go in you'll probably have better luck than I did! All in all, when we return to Funchal this will be where we go for a kick back and relax type day.
