Glaciar del Hielo Azul

I hiked to the Refugio from Dona Rosa, it took me 7h15. To gauge my fitness I run 5km in 32 minutes. If you are less fit than me it will take you much longer - be aware of the sunset. There were people arriving in the dark. That is dangerous! In March 2019 the Refugio cost 500peso. I bought a pizza for 500 and a beer for 130. (Inflation is 30% here next year the prices will be much more). The following morning I hiked to the glacier. The return trip to the Refugio was 3h15. It then took 5h30 to return to Dona Rosa. I had booked a taxi for 6pm. It was quite a challenge to make it on time! You can get a map and register your hike with the mountain service in El Bolson beside the pond in the centre of town. You must hike with 1.5L of water, a torch, a sleeping bag, sturdy shoes and lots of snacks. A two or 3 Refugio hike would be easier than the hike I did - after the glacier you can hike to Natacion Refugio which takes much less time than climbing down the mountain.

Cerro Piltriquitron

The hike to the summit gets very steep in the last km, and the trail is very slippery because of the mud/gravel mixture. Go there with good hiking shoes and good physical condition. The view is breathtaking, and people with vertigo could feel uncomfortable given the cliffs and very steep sections (DO NOT FORGET to register at the refugio before climbing. DO NOT FORGET to go and tell the refugio manager when you are back from the summit, otherwise he will have to go up there to look for you...). The refugio is a wonderful place to get some excellent home-made food and beer. You can also sleep in a dorm for a reasonable price (around 300 pesos a night). The guy (Rodolpho if I remember well) who manages the refugio is very nice and you can have a chat with him about life in the mountains. He knows it all about the place and will be happy to inform you. The place has a great athmosphere, so do not miss the opportunity to stop there. Access: if you have a car, you can drive up to the "plataforma" 1 km under the Bosque Tallado. Be warned that the road to get there is in terrible condition and very steep. We have seen some guys with Renault Clio and similar 2WD drive up there, but we felt way safer in our 4WD. Have a wonderful hike!
