Montagne Pelee

This mountain may look innocent, but don't be fooled: it's really a volcano, responsible for the destruction of the town of St. Pierre.

You drive to the trailhead where there's a small cafe and washrooms. The trail starts right there, and it's 1:30 - 2:00 to reach the rim of the caldera, with spectacular views of St. Pierre harbour, and the N-NE coast of the island on your way up. Unfortunately, by the time we got there, the clouds had rolled in and we could see only bits and pieces of things from the top, through the clouds. It was clear at the top when we started (about 09:30), but cloudy when we go to the top (11:15). We should have started earlier - 07:00 would probably be good most days. Once you reach the rim, you can then continue to hike around the rim, and/or you can hike to an adjacent peak that's even higher. We didn't do either of those because of the clouds, though. This is a good hiking workout on a trail that's perfectly marked, and is mostly walking. There is a section of "bouldering" that takes 5 - 10 minutes, but the rest is walking and stair climbing over smooth rock, some rubbly rock, and a lot of steps that have been formed with lumber to help prevent erosion.

Best attraction on island aside of the Balata Garden! A place where you don't see time passing and a very nice botanical garden.

Anse Couleuvre

The beach wasn't crowded and its surroundigs are very interesting - near the beach, there are remainings of an old farm. I also recommend going to the waterfall through the jungle (the footpath starts near the parking lot). You will see lots of lizzards in the jungle, as well as interesting plants (there grow naturally plants that are regarded as houseplants in Europe). The downsides (just FYI): the beach is a little bit far from the parking lot (aprox. 10 minutes walking), there are no restaurants in the area. Driving could be little bit difficult as well, the road is curvy and narrow. But all the positive aspects outweigh these downsides :)

Lovely gardens with very interesting forest type walks, through vast collections of trees and plants. Great spotting different lizards along the streams / waterfalls. Excellent educational centre and we enjoyed a taste of local cuisine.

We arrived by 5:30 to watch the sunset and had a fish sandwich 10 euros plus fries for 2 euros. Delicious! Good outdoor seating on the beach or on wooden platform with comfy chairs as we chose. Lots of international guests. Bartender friendly and knows some English. We like to eat early and some formal more expensive places just start dinner at 7:00. This place is 10am- 10 pm and sometimes to midnight. Not wild at 6:00 with some families there eating with young kids.

Cascade Couleuvre

Reviewed By Nipauer - Louny, Czech Republic

I went to waterfall pretty by accident. My original place to visit was beach, but it was worth it. Hike can be done pretty fast (40min one way) when you are in good shape. Hike is beautiful, but the road can be sometime a little confusing. Just follow well-trodden path and some arrows on the rock and you will be fine. Bring some water, good shoes and dont underestimate tropical climate. You will go in shade but humidity and high temperature will do its work. Waterfall is amazing, water is cool and refreshing. 100% worth of trip. PS: Road to the "parking" lot is just hell, especially when you have rented car as I had.
