Palacio Taranco

This impressive 20th-century building was designed by French architects and now houses a decorative arts museum with Uruguayan furniture, clocks, paintings and more.

Reviewed By sharonhW264WM - Las Vegas, United States

This beautiful early 20th century palace, reminiscent of Versailles, now houses a decorative arts museum with Uruguayan furniture, clocks, paintings, and the most amazing colorfully-painted pianos imaginable. It looked like a baroque palace with lovely intricate plasterwork, beautiful wood floors, and hand-loomed rugs. It is truly a hidden gem—and entrance is free! All of the rooms—upstairs and down—were beautifully decorated and looked like a place that someone of great wealth had really lived. It even displayed family photographs and other personal items of the original owners. This was my favorite site in all of Montevideo. Don’t miss it!

Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda

The South American cowboy, or “gaucho” is the focus of one collection at this museum, and the other depicts the history of Uruguay’s currency.

Reviewed By YaneLulu - Montevideo, Uruguay

This museum is a must on your montevideo museum list! Shows you and displays a very beautiful range of items referred to the legendary image of the "gaucho" and the countryside life in early uruguayan years. Shows you different types of coins and currency from past eras and even the museum workers have a great attitude and make some fun activities!

Museo – Taller de Casapueblo

Once the home of celebrated Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro, this eye-catching seaside Mediterranean-style structure is today a modern art museum.

Reviewed By thomaskY209MN - Cologne, Germany

The museum is absolutely worth a visit. The rich work of Carlos Páez Vilaró (1923-2014) is well presented. Furthermore his development as an artist is documented: His friendship with Picasso, visits to Albert Schweitzer, construction of Casapueblo with the help of many local friends and my stories more like the resuce of his son. This is a fantastic location at the sea that offers much variety up to drinks and snack. Best time to visit is about 1 hour before sunset: Enjoy the museum, visit the cinema, grab a drink and enjoy the ceremony of the sun: A marvellous poem during sunset, spoken by the artist himself. Best opportunity to do the best sunset photos of your life! If you can make it stay in the hotel for a couple of days and enjoy the beaches and walks e.g. Arboretum Lussich.

Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales

The work of local artists is creatively displayed in this museum that dates back to 1911.

Reviewed By mirandasee2017 - Montevideo, Uruguay

A little bit understated this Museum has a great collection of best known Uruguayan painters since the XIX century. Set on "Parque Rodó" (a small version inspired by London's Hide Park) it's always worth the visit. Showing now the largest Picasso exhibition (must buy tickets) overseas you'll see it crowded.

Visitors can tour this once-famous meat-packing factory, which fed German troops in World War I and the Allies in World War II.

Wing Commander spent 3 nights in Colonia in order to facilitate our day trip to the Museum. Worth the effort especially with a brilliant dinner and tour after at the Narbona Wine Lodge ... best appetizer on this planet. Lots of advice for the self drive tourist: - Q-Trip: Bad directions all round as 21 takes you through all the towns then looses you. Bypass seems to be the way ... missed that suggestion. But we toured downtown Dolores and Mercedes. Uruguayans are so hospitable. The roads are good. There was not one single sign directing us to the Museum site nor the entrance. We played the fools by entering the technological school. - Q-Trip: English tour at 10 and 3 ... seemed to early or too late. Therefore pick up rental night before and start by 7. I would double check with Museum all details. Nicolas saved us from a dud ending by showing us around. - Q-Trip: Our car rental was cheaper than the gas. Private guide may help but not give you the flexibility.

Museo Del Mar

4 Museos in 1 ! MUSEUM OF THE SEA, HISTORY OF BEACH RESORTS, MUSEUM COLLECTIBLES, INSECTARIUM Over 5000 specimens you never imagined you would see. History of Punta del Este, hundreds of photos. Pirates and buccaneers room. Collectibles: vintage articles. All this in a permanent exhibition in the year.

Reviewed By MarinaLussich - London, United Kingdom

This is a gem which we only discovered this year. My boys were flabbergasted at the array of whale and other sea creatures’ skeletons on display. There are many other elements such as vintage tin cans and the history of traditional Uruguayan sea resorts including Punta of course and Piriapolis. The insectarium across the road is also very compete and worth the visit. Only barrier is they don’t accept credit cards (unthinkable in this day and age) but accept US dollars and euros.

This museum is a must visit place when in Punta Del Este. It has free entry and is full of bronzes in the gardens through which one can walk. There are also two floors indoors which has a collection of paintings and sculpture by some of Latin America's most talented artists complemented by works by Dali, Chagall and others. Of particular interest are the many caricature paintings of past and current day events. The Ralli Museum is set in a beautiful building itself. This is one of the best museums I have visited offering something totally different from what one would expect.
