The Abbaye aux Dames is today the musical hub of Saintes. It was the first convent in the Saintonge region. The nuns were powerful women, wearing crosses and striking coins. The influence of the abbey was vast. This is still true today thanks to its musical activities and its unique architectural heritage.The Notre Dames church is a pearl of Romanesque art. The portal is richly decorated. The bell tower, in the shape of a pine cone and covered in stone scales, can be visited. Bayonne's Cathedral, with its twin spires and surrounded by narrow streets really dominates the old part of this lovely city. While the Gothic cathedral is impressive from the outside (including the cloisters, the flying buttresses and the twin sprires - which in fact were not finished until the 19th century), it was the church's interior we found truly beautiful. Some superb stained-glass windows and exquisite wall paintings to be seen.

We walked here from our hotel .The fountain and towering column was erected 1894 - 1902. Amazing status of sea horses and sculptures. The only negative is the amusement park spoiled some of the view.

Passing through Porte Dijeaux we enter the old Historic area of Bordeaux. This takes us into the area with lots of great shops and restaurants. It is amazing and ancient .
