10 Lodges in Western Highlands: Best hotel deals for 2023

May 19, 2023 Terina Blouin

Guatemala’s spectacular Western Highlands run from Antigua to the Mexican border. Pines blanket misty hillsides, rivers cascade through sliver-thin ravines, volcanoes rumble overhead. Catch market day or witness offerings to drinking, smoking St. Maximon, in Chichicastenango. See traditional life in the Ixil Triangle. Clamber the Cuchumatanes Mountains. Mayan dialects and ceremonies are still part of everyday life for the majority of Guatemala’s indigenous population, living where their ancestors trod.

Best view with the best yoga classes. Had really good experience. The rooms are comfortable and you get three meals a day. All the meals are really delicious and healthy. I really recommend to come for at least one night and not only for the yoga classes.

"Stupido Gringo"

Reviewed By solojfred23

I originally reserved this hotel through Expedia and waited to pay until I arrived. I had no idea that the hotel did not accept American Express, and apparently neither did they! They ran my card until I received a notification that my card was locked. I unlocked my card and they continued trying until I was sent to my room. I was escorted to the room I wanted and had a great view with a private balcony, which was nice. The door was only a sliding glass door which came away from the wall when opened. I went in and found that there was no air conditioning as advertised and looked around. The man who sent me there disappeared. He returned and handed me towels and walked away. I was told at the front desk that they would expect payment the next day but never explained why my card wasn't accepted. I became very uncomfortable as I sat there and thought about how I was coldly treated. I decided to leave and find a place closer to the city center where a warmer staff greeted me at the Hotel Kaqchiquel. I tried to cancel my stay there at the Perla Maya, but the Wifi went in and out in my room. I planned on canceling at the next hotel. I dropped my key off at the front desk and explained to the woman that I was uncomfortable there and how I thought the staff was rude and never explained why I couldn't pay with my Amex. She refused to let me leave. She had to call her boss. I stood there and heard her call me a "Stupido Gringo" to the person at the other end of the phone. I tried to leave and she chased me saying I had to pay. I told her I would cancel when I had wifi and she would get the cancellation fee then. She continued to yell in the phone and then said, "get out stupid gringo!" I ran out. I have never felt so terrible in a hotel or anywhere for that matter as I did there. Beware the staff and the rudeness! This location is not close to the city center, the staff are all rude and the amenities are not what are advertised!

A beautiful place to relax

Reviewed By 479stephaniek

We absolutely loved staying at the cabañas. The are beautifully designed cabañas with big rooms and creative touches throughout the property. The gardens are lovely and well maintained. Antonia who looks after the guests and property was very helpful with all of our questions or requests, and she cooks lovely meals if you want to eat there. Just a little off the lake with a private pier, but we really enjoyed relaxing in the gardens. The village of Tzununa gave us an insight into real life in this part of Guatemala, which was great to escape the tourist swamped parts of the lake. Would love to come back again someday

Comfortable accommodations reasonably priced

Reviewed By blandboy

Our group of 28 stayed here overnight on a missions trip to a Callel. Clean rooms were on the small side. Beds were comfortable. Single sink bathroom was small, shower had adequate water pressure and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was mediocre; the small portions included eggs, pancakes and mushy waffles. Not the Ritz or the pits...it worked ok for our group.

I was lucky to have the center to myself with tourist's just coming back! Sonya from @eighthlightyoga, the manager, the very personable and we connected on may levels. She really tailored the classes for me too! Lance, the chef, cooked really divine meals, healthy and creative. Even though I was on own at the whole of the center, I felt real friendship and respect for my own quiet space. I would highly recommend!! The property itself is lovely, I gave 4 stars just because it could use some "spiffing-up" in the rooms but it is Guatemala and there is wet weather to contend with. Be ready for a few spiders and such. Carman did an awesome massage, I did 1.5 hrs deep tissue. There are also lots of little smoothies and snacks, it was overall a really peaceful time, I am pleased to of tried out this center!

Lovely Hotel

Reviewed By Dawnie_Bird

Hidden behind a courtyard on a very busy street, it would be easy to miss. It is gorgeous. Pros - great restaurant on site. Beautiful new pool and landscaping. Nice showers. Safe. Clean. Quiet once the city calms down. Cons - Rooms have no ventilation, heat or air conditioning - we froze at night but the hotel was kind enough to give each of us another cozy blanket. Because there is no air circulation walls and curtains can get moldy and nothing dries ever. Screens on the windows would help. It would be great if fans and/or space heaters would be provided. No hot water at the sinks.
