Avoid like the plague

At first glance this simple, rather run down hotel seemed ok in a rather simple, family run place, stuck in a time warp. My itinerary, generated by my company, had said I could upgrade to half board for €15 so on this basis , when I was asked at check in would I like dinner? I decided yes, and told her so. My room was extreme dated, cold and very basic. A rock hard bed and aging pillows along with a nylon quilt cover did little to cheer me. Despite the promise of WiFi, the signal was so poor that during my three day stay I was unable to upload important documents. Since I was in Palestrina on business it seemed pretty silly. But now we come to the main reason for my dissatisfaction with this hotel and why I would have awarded zero rather than one if I could. I was checked in by a perfectly amiable woman, as was the waiter who served me both nights. Since there was no menu presented and a list of dishes suggested ( in Italian which is no problem for me but would have been impossible otherwise) I managed to get a mozzarella starter, steak, artichokes and two small jugs of the cheapest local wine and a bottle of fizzy water. It still seemed like a good deal for €15. When I went up to bed I asked if there was something to sign to my room, which would have given me an idea of the price. No, it must be the €15. Next evening I had pretty much the same except no mozzarella on offer but did I like fish? Without suggestions as to what the fish starter was I was somewhat surprised to be served a very old, very purées potato rather than fish, micro waved fish cake. Not good but steak and vegetables to follow ok. I’d forgotten to add that the man I presume was the husband of the woman who had checked me in failed to smile or utter any kind of greeting. But on my final day with the absolutely GHASTLY breakfast- one stale croissant, a packet of dry biscuits with a plastic square of butter and some vile, red sugary ‘juice’- it was him who I had to settle my bill with. I had fully expected the bill for food might be slightly higher since I’d had wine, but it really was of the cheapest, poorest quality. Without even looking at me he began to write out my bill. My room rate was €10 a night more than agreed but it was not that which infuriated me. He next fiddled with a calculator and came up with the preposition€38.70 PER DINNER!! A total of €77.40 for something of average at best quality, served in an empty restaurant. When I protested he handed me a blank paper, no prices next to any item, just the number of drinks and dishes I’d had, with no reference at all to the food. DISGRACEFUL. No wonder the restaurant was empty.

Amazing breakfast with total privacy

Great family hosts with magnificent breakfast. The cake was delicious and they really care for your privacy. Very spacious room with a nice view to the garden which must be nice in the summer. The lady insisted us taking some bread and cake with us for the road. Two days later I still recall the great cake. Pay attention it is not in the center of town and you'll have to walk a bit to get there.

We stayed here for six nights and had the master bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The room was clean, comfortable, and very spacious. Note that some rooms don’t have the ensuite. The b&b is a little outside of Palestrina, away from the noisy roads, but still within walking distance from a pizzeria, bake shop, and grocery store. The closest train station is about a ten minute drive away. Rosanna was very welcoming, but only speaks Italian. We believe her sons, who initially started the b&b, spoke a few more languages (English, French, etc.). She was helpful in recommending local restaurants and places to visit in the area. Guests have access to a fully functional kitchen which we used on several occasions to cook supper. Breakfast consisted of traditional Italian items such as pastries, cookies, yogurt, fruit and coffee, and was served at our desired time. Overall, we felt very “at-home”. This is a wonderful b&b for people who can communicate in Italian (we could) and who are using/renting a car.

The historical Villa Finzi is located on a private gated estate, surrounded by olive trees and apple orchards, a park and a wide range of walking trails. It’s only 20 minutes from downtown Rome by train. Its location is ideal to visit the hustle and bustle of Rome during the day and then relax in the countryside in the evening. Where "gentile" really means something

Reviewed By BillMagrath

Out of the way, frayed around the edges, persistently gentile in the face of modern encroachments, the villa Finzi preserves a dying tradition echoed in its name. The furnishings are aged but honest, the conveniences are tempermental, the wi-fi and TV are reluctant, but the hosts, Marcello and Francesca, are gracious, knowledgeable, engaging and friendly. We loved visiting again and will return to renew our amicizia.

Lovely weekend in sunny and colourful home

I stayed at Il Giardino delle Camelie for a weekend in July the stay was amazing. Everything was true like the pictures , big rooms with private toilet and AC always available as it was really hot during our visit. Very close to the town centre , walking distance to many bars and pubs. Stefano was available at all time and he recommended us couple of good restaurants and a long nice walk. Perfectly happy with the breakfast and variety of food and I also enjoyed the little patio just outside the entrance . Hope to go back there very soon.

Molto importante per chi viaggia in auto il parcheggio comunale sotto il B&B, tutto a portata di mano vicinissimo al centro storico e per chi volesse visitare roma, la stazione di Zagarolo è a pochi chilometri di distanza. Cosigliatissimo.
