Gorgeous lakeside oasis

Reviewed By krisvold

Gringo Perdido was recommended to us by our Guatemala-based travel agent and we loved it. The recently renovated (2020 or 2021 after a storm blew through) large pavilion that encompasses the dining area, lounge area, coffee station, and access to the primary (of several) docks into the lake felt like a jungle oasis. Looking out at the water (or back at the property from the docks), you cannot see other hotels or developments. We also did a private yoga class and had massages all at the end of one of the docks, over the lake - it was so peaceful. Staff were attentive and the onsite manager/owner was so friendly and personable. There were a couple of instances where we asked reception questions and they came back across the property to let us know the answers as soon as they had the answer. The food was also fresh and delicious for every meal and we were more than happy to have breakfast and dinner onsite each day and eat lunch while we were out sightseeing in the region. While we stayed at Gringo Perdido we visited Yaxha and Tikal. Yaxha was 60-90 minutes away and Tikal was ~40 minutes. The hotel staff were also generous in sharing insight into closer activities and sightseeing opportunities. I would also recommend spending at least a half-day lounging on site and snagging some chairs at the end of a dock for sunset.

le plus beau ponton du lac

Reviewed By JEAN MICHEL L

Be aware you absolutely need to know minimum Spanish or at least have a translator app because no one on site or in this town can speak a word of English. Not that speaking another language should be expected but it is definitely worth making a note of from a tourist's perspective. When we tried to check in there was no record of our booking, luckily we had a screenshot of our reservation and after that we were shown to our room. The room was very simple but with air conditioning. The wifi was very spotty and we had no electricity for about 3 hours the next day. There is a small shop where you can refill your water for free and grab snacks as well as a restaurant on site which served free breakfast to guests of the hotel. There is a good restaurant next door called El Arbol which is nice for lunch. Staff were not the most friendly, maybe because they were annoyed that we can't speak their language? In hind sight we should've probably stayed in Flores where there is a little more going on but if you are looking for a quiet place and can speak Spanish with confidence this place will be fine for you. El Remate is a little bit closer to Tikal which was our reason to stay here.

Peaceful place with helpful local people

Reviewed By Deniseasy

I stayed at Bruno's for two nights with my partner before we took a trip to El Mirador. The room was fine for our needs, as we were just looking for a place to rest our heads at night. Bruno was helpful in organising our trip for us and drove us to Flores at 5am which was more that we would expect from a hostel owner! We were charmed by this simple hostel and thought it made for a nice stay in El Remate.

Posada del Cerro

Palms, stones and local woods form the houses of the Posada del Cerro which you find directly at the entrance to the protected area "Biotopo Cerro Cahui".The design of the buildings merges harmonically into the subtropical ambience of the lake Petén Itzá which is spreading out in front of the Posada del Cerro. Good and personal service as well as excellent food round up the attraction of this small Hotel. The Hotel has enough space to accommodate up to 34 people.

An Oasis from Omnicron for a Family of Four...

Reviewed By Moshidog

My wife, 11 and 13 yea-olds, I really enjoyed our December 2021 visit to Posada del Cerro. From my first interactions with him on WhatsApp, Ricard Busquets, the manager of del Cerro was organized, gracious, and helpful. We opted for the three-bed apartment in the lodge, so we could prepare lunches and breakfasts for ourselves. Sitting on the apartment’s deck at night, listening to the (loud) insect sounds of the forest was wonderful. The apartment was basically furnished and, while you wouldn’t want to cook up a seven-course dinner, the apartment’s kitchen was sufficient; we found going up to the main kitchen/dining area 25 meters away to get another plate (or a bit of sugar) was super easy. The kitchen staff will provide jugs of drinking water for your use upon request. Dinners at del Cerro were limited to 2-3 choices (always a vegetarian option) and given the limited number of tables/seats, you needed to make a reservation for dinner by late afternoon. Despite this, dinners at del Cerro’s restaurant were surprisingly tasty and the proportions larger than expected. As was our experience with other lodging in Guatemala, COVID protocols were integrated into all operations in terms of cleaning & spacing of tables. Ricard and his staff always wore masks; guests wore them as well, though this is a social expectation, not a demand. Right across the road from the hotel is a grassy area from which we all swam in the (very-warm) lake. Finally, a stay at del Cerro is money well spent. All told, we really enjoyed our six nights at Posada del Cerro.

I would highly recommend Bungalow Amarillo for an incredible jungle view complete with howler and spider monkeys and toucans. Great place to stay. Nice comfortable room. Has no A/C. Not an issue with me as I never use A/C. Staff very friendly. We don't speak Spanish but we managed to communicate. Swimming available across the street on a long dock .Sign says beware of Crocs. What? Kids were swimming so I guess they were not hungry. Had breakfast and it was very good.
