Italian South Sea resort

Reviewed By Philipp H

Baia del Godano probably comes as close to a South Sea resort as you can get in Italy. Nice apartments/rooms, a restaurant by the sea with very nice food, the best choices for breakfast we had during our round trip, a well-kept flower/garden zone, a private beach, an open air fitness center and a very kind receptionist who, among other things, organized our parking at our next stop in Matera. Yes, it was expensive, but it was well worth it.

We absolutely loved our time here!

We loved everything about this fantastic resort. Katerina was wonderful to deal with in the mornings. Sam and Valentina were perfect hosts in the afternoons and evenings and defintely helped make our stay very enjoyable. The other lady, (apologises I can't remember her name) along with the rest of the staff were hard working and very polite. Nothing was too much trouble for them to ensure that we had a good vacation. We are hoping to return next year. The view of Stromboli belching gas is our enduring memory of the sunsets during our stay.

Post-Covid revival

Reviewed By martkapl

I was one of the first post-Covid guests, and my impression was that they were not yet ready. Hotel is located within the beautiful shores of Calabria. Walking distance to Ricadi train station (no pavement). Hard to get to a grocery store / market on foot (I needed to get a taxi, luckily I was given a phone no. on the way from the said taxi driver). There are 3 types of rooms: lowest standard is close to the sea, medium standard are houses on the premises, and highest standard is in the big building close to the pool. Itaka guests: beware, it turned out that the choice I had with Itaka (sea view or not) was only the choice within the lowest standard! The hotel made a nice gesture (appreciated!) and upgraded us to the deluxe standard. Rooms are indeed beautiful, new, perfectly equiped (loved the shower! An absolute blast!). The whole area is well kept and tidy, very pleasant. An absolute joy to the eye. But: I made it crystal clear I needed a quiet room. I first got a room on the ground floor (felt like in an aquarium, just a few steps from the terrace to the pool loungers….). And it was SO NOISY!!! There are continously either animations or just loud music around the pool. The alternative room we got was on the 1st floor (this is better) but again so close to the pool… and it was the worst experience. If you are looking for a quiet place to relax, if you like to sit on the balcony in the afternoon and enjoy a book - La Conchiglia’s top standard is not a place for you. They play the music until well past 23:30 and you can hear the beats even with your window shut. And remember the breakfast is only 7:30-9:30…. It’s hard to get the right amount od sleep there (unless you’re a party animal or you just like/don’t mind the music - you should be fine). I also had trouble sleeping because of the heat, my impression is that the air-conditioned air flow somehow does not reach the corner bed (the small one). The air conditioning turned off automatically while I still could not breathe because of the heat. I was waking up from the heat and stuffiness a few times each night just to change the aircon settings to force it to resume its work. My friend on the big, centrally placed bed had no such troubles, though. The beach is within the walking distance, but do check on Google Earth how the ground is shaped. It is not a mild slope. There is a bus from/to the hotel, but remember the siesta pause (last bus from the beach before lunch: 12:30, then first bus to the beach is as late as 15:00; then two last busses from the beach are at 16:30 and 18:30). There is a lifeguard on the beach who also keeps order on the beach - rarely does one see such a dedicated, hard working person, going the extra mile for his workplace. The first row of umbrellas is usually paid, 10 EUR I think - I was not aware as the hotel did not bother to inform the guests…. Under every umbrella there is a set: one sunbed (to lie down) and one deck chair (to sit). It is frowned upon if you mess it up… At least I was stressed about it at first when I got reprimended in Italian, but then it got better and friendlier. You should take swimming shoes, as the beach sand is with pebbles and the sea bottom is with stones and other weird materials such as bricks. Water is crystal clear, absolutely goregous, could not ask for a more beautiful experience! There is a shower on the „top beach”. But there is no bar (or at least: there WAS no bar when I was there, maybe it was just another sign of the hotel’s slow post-covid wakeup). So, you could not get drinking water while on the beach……. And this is something absolutely unacceptable. My option was soft all inclusive and there was NOTHING to drink at the beach. Did they expect me to walk up the whole way to the pool bar?!! My understanding is that all on inclusive you can survive without any money. And how can you survive on the beach without any water…? A fellow guest advised us to order sparkling and still water for lunch/dinner, the waiter will open tye bottles and pour the first glasses, and so you can, umm, take the almost full with you and it will keep you hydrated on the beach…. This is absurd. We ordered a taxi and bought a few packs of drinks in the nearby supermarket… While we’re at the food: breakfast is 7:30-9:30, lunch is 12:30-14:30 and dinner 19:30-21:30. Breakfast was frustrating as it was very Italian, i.e light and sweet (croissants, doughnuts, muffins, crostata). If you don’t like it sweet, you can only get: always the same bread, always the same ham, same salami, same cheese; if you are lucky: same tomatoes, same scrambled eggs, same fried eggs and same fried bacon / sausage. If you are not lucky you must be patient and wait for refill. Due to Covid there is no self-service, you have to tell the cook what you want, and they don’t put much on the plate (it’s humiliating to keep asking for more and more, and not always being understood). It’s all so inconsistent, we were at first not allowed to take e.g tomatoes ourselves, but then it was self-service, and if tomatoes/other fresh vegetables then why not pasta etc?! For lunch and dinner there is always cold buffet, and from hot dishes: 3 types of pasta (one always with tomato sauce, one always with some frutti di mare/fish, one other) and other main dishes, usually fish, and/or e.g. skewers, with french fries / carrots / peas etc. There was not much choice, to be honest, and whenever I went on a daily trip I must admit I felt relieved I would eat elsewhere. 2 weeks of such food is too much. But also, with all honesty, the food that was there was of excellent quality. Very tasty, always fresh, not some cheap plastic all inclusive food. Compliments to the chef. Still, the hotel must work on the organization: at first dishes were not even signed, then hot dishes were signed in Italian only and those plates were often mixed up. There were long queues and empty dishes far too often. Nobody spoke Polish, as opposed to previous reviews. If you make toasts, make sure you turn the knob („wind up the machine”). All inclusive is so NOT worth it. You get breakfast, lunch and dinner, and aside from that - in the pool bar you can get some drinks from the refill machine (water fizzy/still, regular coke (very sweet) and some other e.g. ice tea or something with aloe or with ginger) and very small portions of lemon or strawberry granita. Refills and granita. That’s all. They charge for everything else - ice cream, chips, anything. There is no gelato (and never was during my stay), just standard „shop” ice cream from the freezer. Also the legendary pizza was such a disappointment!! Thick yeast dough, cut into pieces and not fresh (i.e. kep hot under the big red bulb). The croissants (or cornetti in Italian), also from under the red bulb, were however absolutely yummy. The staff is very friendly, smiling and open. The animation team (Fabio, Andrea, Greta and Greta) were also friendly and otimistic and greated everyone in their native language. However, the hotel seems somehow incompatible with animations. There is no place for a show, for mini disco (kids dance in the dark by the sunbeds by the pool!) and even there is no place for bocci on the beach - I was so unlucky that whenever I chose an umbrella far from where the bocci tournament took place the previous day, it turned out this was the exact spot by the bocci field (full of shouting and laughing participants). It would be good to know where they play so that they can play the way they like and I can relax the way I like. To sum up: I appreciate the staff’s efforts and all that La Conchiglia has to offer, but I am not planning to go back there.

Quiet mediocre resort

Reviewed By JoanM7200

Spent 1 week at Cala di Volpe with my family and it was ok. Nothing special. It’s advertised as a 4 star resort but there’s very little that makes this a 4 star resort. I’d give it 3 stars on a good day. The accommodations were very basic. There was only 1 dining table which was outside and nothing inside. TVs we’re only present in the bedrooms and they had a very limited channel lineup. AC worked really good. The beach was nothing like I was expecting. Yes it’s clean and the water is amazing but there’s rocks everywhere and it’s virtually impossible to enjoy the water unless you buy water shoes…even then it’s easy to injure yourself. Most other beaches in the area have less rocks. Pool area was nice but the cap requirement in the pool is ridiculous and utterly useless. The jacuzzi isn’t hot and the jets are very weak. Pool closes at 7pm each night which is also quite dumb for a beach resort. Activities at the resort are nil unless you’re a little kid and they have some activities for kids. Nothing to really do at the resort. Restaurant quality is ok but prices are very high especially for the area. Easily 40-50% higher than most restaurants outside the resort. The resort was ok but for the amount of money they charge you can find much better.

The restaurant servers were very nice; pool and bar nice, and the beach was fantastic. Sandy beaches with great fish to see why snorkeling right off the beach area. Restaurants and bars on the beach area and the hotel drives the guests to and from the beach in a golf cart upon request all day. Just a very peaceful place to stay. Upon leaving, they provide a nice gift of jams as a thank you for staying at their hotel. I would go back for sure. It is off the beaten track so, it is quiet and lovely.

I came here for one night. The hotel is fully new, built on top of a restaurant, same owners. The rooms were incredibly well equipped, 5-star like utilities, including a large balcony with drying rack and table. The rooms were very clean, position was great too, walkable distance from the main beech in Capo Vaticano. The owner was very accommodating, taking also into account that I was pretty late for my checkout, she didn’t complain at all and did’t charge me the extras she could have had due to my delay.
