Worst hostel during 4 weeks in Mexico - Avoid!

Reviewed By NomadeBjoernen

After 4 weeks in Mexico we ended our trip in MX City and stayed in 1 private room at Roomies. The room was the size of a big closet and had no window or any form of ventilation, hence the air is terrible during the night. Sleeping well in the tiny room without any air was impossible. Furthermore, the bed (which was described as a “twin bed”) was the worst bunk bed i’ve Sleept in during all my travels. If the person in the above/below bunk bed moved just a bit, the whole bed moved. The shared toilets consists of just 1 toilet for each gender for the whole hostel, and there is no door between the bathroom and the kitchen, which means everybody in the kitchen know what is going on in the toilet. When we booked the room, the conditions said that we could pay with card but upon arrivel the employees demanded us to pay for all 4 days in cash (perhaps not a big problem if you knew beforehand, but just another example of misinformation). In general our hostel experiences in Mexico have been good but Roomies was terrible and it is in my personal top 3 of the worst hostels I have stayed in during all my different travels in quite a lot of countries. I will not recommend any to stay here, especially due to the bad air in the rooms (the dorms might have better ventilation than the private rooms though).

Worst hostel I have been to in Mexico

Reviewed By I1389FJvictoriag

Overpriced and overrated This hostel really isn't worth the money. The vibe here is very young and clicky, mainly 18 year old Americans, if you have a personality you will be bored af. the toilet could only flush once per hour (so there was often a nice surprise waiting for you from the last person to use the toilet) it's disgusting. there is no fans or AC in the rooms. The water refill in the kitchen is a joke the slow trickle of water would take forever to fill a bottle. the few tours they offer are overpriced (more expensive than booking with the provider direct). The free walking tours were cancelled last minute when I tried to attend these, I booked 4 nights here and really wanted to leave early, this has been my worst hostel in 7 weeks of traveling Mexico. This is the least chill hostel I have stayed at you cannot bring any outside food into the hostel, I got told off for eating a slice of banana bread on the rooftop in the middle of the day. Do not stay here it is the worst hostel with the dullest vibe, you will regret paying excessively to stay here, it is the worst I hated every day here

A BEAUTIFUL SURPRISE

Reviewed By 529damarism

Looking through their photos I thought it would be an ugly place since they have put an ugly first photo on their page but look past that and book immediately! The place is beautiful outside and inside! They are really clean too! It’s around everything and near zocalo. I was really surprised that a hostel in Mexico can look this good. Book book book! And it was also very surprisingly cheap. The only down side is that they sell soap rather than give one for free lol

Shame this party hostel is run by the fun police at the weekends

Reviewed By Flick_Nic

It is such a shame you can not clone Victor so he can work all of the hours at this hostel because if it was not for him (who was not on duty this evening) who welcomed me when i was exhausted and made me feel like id come to the right place tis place would be a hell hole. Its beautifully decorated and has a great breakfast. I was looking for a lace to chill with nice people after some bad news and have a little party before Christmas and i thought this was the place to come. Because they smelt weed from the street whilst a few guests were smoking cigarettes the fun police came out and shut the party in the party hostel which was pretty tame edge to it. For tonight and its a weekend i got to pay 50peso extra for my room... for an adult in her late 30's i was shocked to see such horrific stalking behavior from the power tripping security guard and manger with guests. Shutting the party down and waiting outside girls bedrooms to make sure they don't have sex with male guests when they have a condom box. He just walked in on 2 people this evening having sex and told them to stop and told them to pay him a bribe. This is not a secure, safe or fun place to be at the weekend. I sat back absolutely in dismay after 1 beer in shock at how paying guests who are adults are treated. The new volunteer Alex (who was on duty this evening - absolute superstar) who is wonderful my second night here with the Thursday night security and manger would have been horrific. Please don't make Alex or Victor work all the hours next time i will just come back during the week when they are working but do not come here at the weekends. Feliz-Rose I will be back as i during the week as it is a 5* Hostel during the week.

Cheap with good location

Reviewed By the_traveling_viking

It is a hostel, so don’t expect it to be fancy. The room was large, but there were no windows. The lack of soap at the handwash in the shared bathrooms gets annoying, along with the lacking waterpressure. The staff is very nice though and the complementery breakfast very interesting.

This is a nightclub, not a hostel.

Reviewed By PierreLouisLemaire

DON’T COME HERE! There are better places to spend your money. This hostel is a money-machine. Music all night, the rooms smell horribly, they organize private party and close the kitchen and terrace for full days. People yell and talk in the corridors all night (up to 3am). Doors smashing every 5 minutes. You will not sleep. Moreover the rooftop is open to everyone so you won’t find any nice hostel atmosphere. It’s not a hostel, it’s a nightclub. Not to add that we couldn’t find clean toilets over two floors after the private party.

Warning

Booking reference 283893-529473148 I need to make a formal complaint against your manager at Selina’s Mexico, he has robbed me lied to me and black mailed me and my partner. We have been very good clients of Selina’s all through Central America until now. If you have a team manager who I could contact and speak to about this mater I need to resolve it as I do not want to have to to contact a Mexican lawyer and go down that road. The police were in evolved, they tried to take advantage of the face my Spanish is not the best by saying they had video cameras, as I new I was innocent I said perfect let’s see the the footage. Once they realised I knew they were lying they told me I had two options, 1 pay the hotel for the damage and also pay the police. Which is corruption in Mexican law as I am sure you are aware of. As for the items missing they said they have no responsibility for these. The manager then through me out, I would like a formal review into his position and luckily a young man who just started work there 4 days earlier translated what was happening. I’m very sorry to have to Wright this email it has been very hard as I have enjoyed your hostels up until this point Regards David

Good basis for exploring the Chapultepec and Zona Rosa

Reviewed By Inga_K_K

The hostal is located in a nice neighbourhood, great for exploring the Chapultepec area, the Zona Rosa. Close to metro. The owner is very pleasant and cares about guests, he provided a map, a metro map and was happy to give more info. I could hear the guests in the next room all too well. The room was a bit tired. A TV would be nice. This was the only place I stayed in Mexico where no shampoo was provided (obviously also no blow-drier). Breakfast was nothing special, I was not even tempted for the seconds.
