The Interpretation Centre of the Romanesque

The Interpretation Centre of the Romanesque, promoted by the Route of the Romanesque, opened to the public on September 27, 2018, in the town of Lousada, Porto. The exhibition concept behind this major venue for the dissemination of historical-cultural heritage stands out for the boldness of its architecture, but also for the multiple interactive experiences provided by its museographic contents. In addition to a reception, a bar and a library, the CIR comprises an exhibition area with approximately 650 square meters, organised in large central foyer and six theme-based rooms: Territory and Establishment of Portugal; Medieval Society; The Romanesque; The Builders; Symbolism and Colour; Monuments Over Time. Thus, the Interpretation Centre of the Romanesque emerges as the ideal setting for you to start your journey of discovery of the Route of the Romanesque and its territory of influence, as well as of the art and symbolism that marked Portugal and Europe over in the Middle Ages.

Museu Militar Do Porto

Reviewed By bfltd0 - London, United Kingdom

This is a small but perfectly formed museum. It does not cover all areas of history of the Portuguese Armed Forces but it is informative about a country that didn't really hit the headlines militarily. The top floor toy soldier collection is impressive and encompasses several people's collections. The other two periods of history covered on the ground floor are short but sweet, and the main area of interest is in the pavilion in the back garden. This is where the bigger exhibits are and more modern conflicts are covered. Would have cost 3 euro each but we got 50% discount with the Porto card. The guy on the desk was fluent in English but the English translations on the exhibits could do with amending/improving. We arrived mid-morning and were so absorbed by the place that we finished looking around the pavilion after the museum had closed for lunch and the side door we had used to get into the garden was locked. We went into what we thought was a cafe and it turned out to be the staff room where they were tucking into their lunch! We simply walked out of the side gate.

Centro Interpretativo do Patrimonio da Afurada

Reviewed By Paula_Trav - Helsinki, Finland

This is a small museum definitely worth visiting if you wish to undertand something about the importance of fishing in the village of Afurada (and similar places in Portugal) and the hardships associated to it. Even though small scale, the exhibition is clearly well thought out and beautifully arranged. When we visited the museum, there was an English-speaking gentleman who was able to answer our additional questions. I personally think that a visit to this small museum (and other small local museums) also serves as support and encouragement for local people to actively preserve local history and way of life, and to be proud of it.

Nau Quinhentista

Reviewed By hans-jaguar - Santa Comba Dao, Portugal

The Nau Quinhentista is located just across the street in front of the museu “Alfandega Régia”, it is a replica from a Portuguese vessel from the North Atlantic career of the beginning of the 16th century, the vessel was designed by Admiral Rogério d'Oliveira and built at the Samuel & Filhos shipyards, which until 1993 were located in this same place. With a length of 27.50 meters, a width of 7.70 meters, a height of 4.75 meters, and a weight of around 300 tons. On the inside, you can see various reproductions of life on board that time, such as the crew members' quarters, places and ways of storing goods, disposal of cartographic material and instruments to aid navigation, artillery pieces, ballast, among others , in order to represent the complexity faced by navigators on their voyages on the high seas. O location not to be missed.

Pharmacy Museum

The Pharmacy and Health Museum proposes an attractive and unusual experience through 5000 years of health history. Its vast collection includes objects of rare artistic, anthropological, and scientific value, describing a journey, where each civilization is portrayed under a narrative of disease-fighting and the seeking of healing and pain relief, since the first traces of life on earth until today, passing through cultures and civilizations as distinct in time and place as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Incas, the Aztecs, Islam, Africa, Tibet, China, Japan, among others. It is also possible to enter the extraordinary Islamic Pharmacy of the Ottoman Empire, which integrated the interior of a Damascus palace in the 19th century, as well as the Estácio Pharmacy, located at Sá da Bandeira street in Oporto.
