10 Historical & Heritage Tours in Evora That You Shouldn't Miss

July 16, 2021 Alice Mieles

Time seems to stand still in Evora, a well-preserved medieval town that features protective walls, a 13th-century cathedral, several palaces, and a 1st-century Roman temple. No surprise that the town center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even though it’s kind of creepy, don’t miss the Chapel of Bones, where the remains of nuns and monks are arranged in a haunting mosaic.

Lonely Planet wrote about the Alentejo: "Go to be bewitched. Portugal’s largest region, covering a third of the country, truly captivates. Think dry, golden plains, rolling hillsides and lime-green vines. A rugged coastline, traditional whitewashed villages, marble towns and majestic medieval cities. Plus a proud if melancholic people, who valiantly cling to their local crafts." Don't miss out on this private day tour of our most charming region in the country!

If there's a rating above 5 stars, this trip with Daniella deserves it. This was more than a tour. It was actually a pilgrimage that got my 10 year old fascinated at the story of the 3 children of Fatima. My partner who is not catholic was overwhelmed at level of details Daniella took to ensure we enjoyed this trip. With an active and cranky 3 year old, Daniella was very patient and helped soothe our boy several times. This trip is all you need to enjoy Fatima and this got me into planning another trip to Portugal. Thank you ever so much Daniella!

This is a late review, but necessary. We thoroughly enjoyed our private day tour with Sintra Magik in Fatima. The Shrine of course was incredible. The visit to the family home and meeting their descendants were equally touching. We sampled the local cuisine and appreciated the hospitality. Our tour of the religious factory allowed us to return with artifacts for our family. We were so fortunate to have a delightful Irish priest bless these keepsakes. An awesome, memorable day. We highly, highly recommend this tour group.

We spend a long afternoon and evening with Filipe and it was wonderful. I highly recommend him. We visited Sintra and the amazing Perla Palace , the Quinta Regaleira and had the lovely pastry specialty of Sintra. Filipe is a very pleasant charming person to be with, he is very knowledgeable about, the area, the sites, the history and so much more. Time flies with him. We ended the evening in a great fish and seafood restaurant hanging on the side of a cliff Azenhas do Mar. If you are in Lisbon take one of his tours and enjoy.

Évora is located in the Center of Alentejo, from its original name Ébora, was a city defended by a strong castle and surrounded by solid walls when the army of King D. Afonso Henriques commanded by Geraldo “No Fear” conquered the Moors in 1165. Our visit begins towards Évora, passing by the 25 de Abril bridge. Arriving in Évora, visit Giraldo Square, the Castle and the majestic Temple of Diana. We suggest a lunch stop at a typical restaurant and then visit the Bones Chapel, the Cathedral and the San Francisco Church.

Very nice tour I strongly recommend. We were 4 and took a car with a private driver that was really nice, kind, professional and patient. He drove us everywhere and explained all we saw without being nervous or impatient. Finally he added also a city tour that we really enjoyed. Price was very reasonable for a whole day out. Do it, it is really worthwhile. Angelita
