10 Historic Walking Areas in Tokyo That You Shouldn't Miss

May 7, 2022 Deane Carmody

Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

We stumbled upon this fantastic museum by accident as we were heading back to the Metro after visiting a nearby Sumo stable, Oguruma-beya. The entry price is only 400 yen, it's worth every penny. Inside they have re-created an Edo (old Tokyo) town, the attention to detail is magnificent. There are several English speaking guides who are all too happy to show you around (no charge) and I'd recommend this; you'll see all the small details you would miss on your own, plus learn a lot of history. Special thanks to our wonderful guide Nagano Higachi; you are very special lady and we enjoyed our time with you very much x

Imperial Palace

The current palace was constructed in the same spot where Edo Castle used to stand. Most of the palace grounds are not open to the public except for the East Gardens, which are accessible on select days.

I went to Tokyo again this year and had a check list of things I didn’t do on my previous trips. The imperial palace was on it and after a trip to the tsukiji market I took a nice walk to the palace. It’s really very beautiful and all the nice old buildings are a must see. Sadly some party were under construction and since it was summer it was super hot. Luckily they have a small museum and souvenir shop with ac

I had a lovely time wandering through these couple of alleys, before sitting in one of the tiny restaurants for some yakitori- I had beef & also a bunch of veggies wrapped in bacon! Delicious. Some of the restaurants (which are all pretty tiny) have second floors, so dont assume they're all full. Like most bars/restaurants around Tokyo, all have a cover fee ranging from ¥300-1000.
