10 Historic Walking Areas in Kumamoto That You Shouldn't Miss

November 21, 2021 Lean Nau

Proud Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the most important of its kind. Visitors will be awed as they explore its stone curves, array of turrets, and displays of armor, weapons, and maps. Suizenji Jojuen Garden is downright cinematic, a playground of slopes and dips and trees, in a million shades of green. Cherry blossom season is a lovely time to visit.

Kumamoto Castle

Reviewed By dlnun - Nebraska, United States

We spent an afternoon with an English guide from the Kumamoto SGG Club—-Mieko Okada who was our personal guide at the Kumamoto Castle & to the Suizenji Jojuen Gardens. If you go to Kumamoto these two sights should be at the top of your list of things to see & places to go. Hopefully in the next few months more of the reconstruction will allow for an actual tour of the castle, but the grounds, walls, and views were amazing none the less.

Kamitori Shopping Street

We enjoy shopping so much that whenever we are going to a site, we also make sure we go shopping. We prefer shopping for local gift products rather than goihgng to the big malls so shopping street like this is great. Downtown, within walking distance from where we stay. We bought small ornaments that do not break. We love Japanese ceramics, lacquer items, etc. However, we noticed many had made in china at the info tag. So look carefully for made in Japan. Of course, they cost more. Some items we were told...parts from China but made in Japan fyi. Reason is if you visit a country, surely you want to bring home sourvenir from that country not made elsewhere. The products are more authentic. Suggestion for gifts 1.Japanese famous ceramics, pottery like hakata dolls 2. Japanese curtains or tapestry made in Japan 3. Beautiful Japanese towels, handkerchief made in Japan 4. Gift bags, recycle bags like hello kitty kyushu bag,etc more authentic and reminds you of your travel 5. Japanese snacks great but pretty heavy but so great. Get smaller boxes to buy more variety. They costs 500 yen for 6 to 8 pcs onwards about $6 onwards 6. Traditional Japanese crafts like pouch bag, shoulder bag, tote bag, wallets, made in Japan 7. Japanese hokusai umbrellas. They are so beautiful and attract sttention on a wet or sunny day. So many beautiful designs from 2900 yen onwards depending on the design, short or long type. 8. Japanese beauty products many more....till you burst that 20 or 30kg limit!
