An important monument in an historically important part of the city. Both Peter and his horse are poised for action. Design happens to allow for many excellent photo angles. Of course, free to enjoy.

Palace Square

Contrasting architectures and wide open spaces are the hallmarks of this extraordinary plaza, which has witnessed historic events like Bloody Sunday and the storming of the Winter Palace and is now the rallying place for every imaginable political demonstration.

Reviewed By ukienomad - Fleming Island, United States

Huge square with lots to see and it could be overwhelming. The summer palace is there, horses with carriages that you can take a ride in, people with period costumes trying to take pictures with you for a price, statues, and so much more. Actually, the October Revolution and Bloody Sunday took place here. We walked over 19,000 steps that day. Long day but worth it.

Winter Palace of Peter I

Reviewed By RPThorne - Sedgwick, Australia

The Winter Palace is an extensive building with a number of wings and inner courtyards/gardens. It is quite beautifully designed and the stairways and rooms are extraordinary. The Winter Palace is in Palace Square (the green building) and is currently the main building of The State Hermitage Museum, and houses statues, treasures and paintings, as well as thrones and chandeliers. Highly recommended to view from the outside, and worth a visit for the extensive Hermitage museum collection.

Senate Square

Reviewed By BackinBracknell - Bracknell, United Kingdom

This is one of the first places you should see in St. Petersburg. It's probably the most important area and the Bronze Horseman commemorates the founding of the city by Peter the Great, so it's a good place to start. You get a sense of the grand scale of the buildings all around and from here you can easily explore all the other attractions including St. Isaac's Cathedral and of course The Hermitage.
