Awesome views and a real sense of achievement at the top. I went with my 2 daughters aged 5 and 6. I wouldn't recommend this climb for young kids unless they are sensible, follow instructions and have experience with steep, challenging climbs. You really need to keep your kids very close once the steep climbing towards the top begins. If you can compare to other local mountain treks with kids, with Mt Tinbeerwah a 1 out of 10 for difficulty, Mt Ngungun a 3, Mt Coolum a 4, then this would be around 7 or 8 out of 10... but so worth it! Whenever we drive past it conjures up fantastic memories.

Castle Hill

Just metres short of a mountain, Castle Hill is the giant pink granite monolith that stands proud in the centre of Townsville - a perfect place for visitors to orientate themselves. As well as offering vehicle access, Castle Hill provides a number of popular walking tracks, which are frequented by more than 2,500 locals a day! The 360-degree views of Townsville at the top are well worth the journey. Be sure to have a camera on hand, particularly for sunrise or sunset as these are photo opportunities which shouldn't be missed. As well as offering an iconic centre piece for the city and spectacular scenic views, Castle Hill has a significant history. The Hill's vantage was used by visiting American soldiers during World War II. According to local legend, the visitors famously offered to demolish the hill and use the rock to build a bridge to Magnetic Island. A World War II observation bunker sits on one corner of the Hill reminding visitors of Castle Hill's military history. Castle Hill facilities include car parking, public amenities, drink fountains and shaded seating to enjoy while taking in some of the best views of the city and across to Magnetic Island.

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

Experience a walking, riding or horseback adventure back to the late 1800s along the old Brisbane Valley railway line from Wulkuraka in Ipswich to Yarraman. Escape to a 161km off-road adventure trail brimming with breathtaking countryside, unique country towns, local attractions, old train stations and carriages, heritage-listed sites, and rich history of early settlers just 47km from Brisbane. It doesn't matter whether you have one day or a whole week, the BVRT has something to suit everyone – choose your own adventure! With the final link between Toogoolawah and Moore completed in 2018, the BVRT is the longest rail trail in Australia, spanning 161 kilometres. Most of the trail is now an excellent compounded gravel grading that provides a relatively smooth run, although there is the odd rocky section and you should always remain vigilant on rougher areas.

This is a fantastic trail. I did Yarraman to Fernvale. Had a great time and the work put in is really impressive. Some culverts are very steep and some surfaces are very rough but overall it’s very easy to follow. It’s great to have lots of little towns along the way with bakeries and cafes. I overnighted at the Linville hotel and the Esk grand hotel both of which were great places to stay with secure storage for bikes. The one major drawback are the birds during breeding season. I went mid november which should have been the tail end of magpie season. It wasn’t. I counted 17 different magpies swooping me 6 of which repeatedly struck my helmet and tried to go for my face. I tried the trick of staring them down while dismounting. That worked until toogoolawah where they came in pairs, every time you looked at one the other would come in from behind you, they followed me for a km. No idea how that is protecting a nest. Then there were the even worse butcher birds, had four of those all of which repeatedly struck my neck. They make no noise and are much faster. Try staring them down and they go straight for your eyes. The only other thing to be aware of is the heat. Two days were perfect with 6am starts. The third day I started a little later but by 12pm it was 37c with very high humidity. I’d suggest this will be a superb trail apr-Jun.

Love to walk along the Board walk down to the main hub, where you will find the large open green park that surrounds the free and open pool area. There are also childrens play areas and a skate park along the walk which extends from North Cairns to the departure point where the ferries leave to the islands.
