10 Gift & Specialty Shops in Ulaanbaatar That You Shouldn't Miss

August 3, 2021 Veronika Gaddis

Located in the northern part of the country, high above sea level, Ulan Bator is the coldest capital city in the world. The cultural and business center of Mongolia, and a hub connecting the Trans-Siberian Railway with the Chinese rail system, Ulan Bator has become a thriving urban center in one of the most remote locations in the world. Visit the Tibetan-style Gandan Monastery, one of the few buildings in Ulan Bator to predate WWII and one of the few monasteries to survive the Soviet purge.

Artisans and Mary & Martha make a sustainable living and customers buy quality, useful products at reasonable prices. There are quality, fairly-priced souvenirs both large and small, all skilfully handcrafted by local artisans, so by purchasing their goods, you are really helping to support and empower the local community. I left with a stunningly elegant bag made by a Kazakh artisan and a gorgeously colourful zip pouch upcycled from decorative wall hangings. I also had the most wonderful conversation with the founder/owner Irene and learned a lot from her, and found the rest of the staff all very beautiful and kind. My visit to Mary & Martha truly left a smile on my face, and I could not recommend them highly enough.

Gobi

Reviewed By Global768312 - Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

I visited other shops including the main Gobi store downtown. Cashmere is expensive, face it and get over it. However, the outlet store is cheaper. I had the good luck to make it to the annual Black Friday sale in November. It goes on the whole month. Everything was at least 20% off up to 70% off. Scarves were down from $40 (American) to $18. I decided that instead of a lap blanket I would get a shawl instead. Then I could use it on my legs in winter, or as a shawl in the warmer seasons. I bought three scarves, a shawl, and a cardigan sweater for half what I would have paid normally. The outlet store is normally cheaper year round anyway. If you are looking to buy Cashmere products when you visit, try here first. It is a huge store and has everything, coats sweaters, accessories such as hats and gloves, etc.

Naran Tuul Market

Reviewed By geelongexpat - Chatan-cho, Japan

This is an expansive outdoor market known to the locals as the black market. It is perfect if you haven’t quite got all your gear together for a cold Mongolian winter. There are traditional Mongolian clothes here as well. A four storey mall also has things to buy and a food court if you need to get out of the cold.
