We made an early start to beat the heat and caught the gorgeous morning light in photos. It was nice and quiet to beat the crowds as well. We did the 14km round trip to the Art Gallery and I have to say that the major beauty is in the offshoot attractions of the Moss Gardens, The Ampitheatre, Wards Canyon and The Art Gallery. They are more strenuous to reach but I highly recommend if you are physically able. There is only 1 toilet at the turnoff to the Moss Gardens and then another at the very end of the gorge so make sure you go before heading out and make use of the one at the Moss Garden turnoff. Take plenty of water, wear very comfortable and supportive footwear and a hat and I recommend a walking stick to keep your balance while navigating the stepping stones across the creek crossings. If you set out early enough there are several wooden sticks at the start of the track for this purpose but they soon disappear until people start returning from their walk around lunchtime.

An easy walk; some stairs (handy tip: take a water bottle) and then rewarded with spectacular views of the amazing sandblow. Kids: Take your boogie board if you want the thrill of riding down the sand dune. Great little adventure for families for an hour or two. Beautiful to watch the sunset if you’re timing is right (check sunset times)

Park that contains the remains of the longest flow of lava on earth, which has created a complex network of subterranean caves and passages.
Great place set up by a local family station holders. Sealed road all the way off the highway. Great camping, caravan park and glamping tents available. Lots of wild life, the Lava Tubes are well worth a visit. There is a gift shop, restaurant and bar. We dined at the restaurant and the meals were fantastic. Great view from restaurant with outdoor wood fire on cold nights. Lots of other activities also, campfire sing songs, walks and hikes.

North West Outback Safaris offered a 15-day tour from Cairns that was reasonably priced and well organised and resourced (guidance, transport, food and lodging). Departure began with an introduction to my traveling companions and Terry our guide/driver. The six of us were comfortable in our 4-wheel drive and we enjoyed getting to know each other. The first night, setting-up camp at a cattle station, we were given a sheet, pillow and towel and told to keep these. We were also given a tent, cot and mattress and instructed to turn these in when we break camp. I was pleased that all of this stuff was clean and without odour. It took three days to drive to Seisia. Putting-up and taking-down camp, and getting on the road by 8.00am, was a push but we retired early after enjoying food and drink prepared by a chief (and frozen – plenty to eat and well-made). We explored the northern tip and visited Roko, Thursday and Horn islands during our four nights in Seisia. Along the way we stopped to examine ancient aboriginal art, visit historic telegraph stations, explore national parks, swim at Fruit Bat Falls and walk to The Tip of the Australian continent. The linchpin that makes such a trip a success is the guide/driver. Terry is so knowledgeable about the geography, wildlife, history, etc. He was very easy going but kept us on task. Terry is not the only guide/driver employed by NW Safaris but I sense that this tour company has a team of dedicated guides that make each trip memorable.

Lovely little spot located just outside of Bibinda township (amazing pie shop) Great little picnic area and touristy swimming area with easy access to the water with the aid of man made ramps and platforms. Very crowded so make sure you get there early to save a spot if you want to set up for the day. Lovely little small walk of to the side also following down stream to a couple of lookouts overlooking the flowing river/boulders below. Great experience for the whole family. “Jonique Life” Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

This is an isolated location, on the Nappa Merrie cattle station, and is well worth making a special trip to see. We arrived late in the afternoon, and camped overnight on the banks of Cooper Creek. This is one of the most serene camp sites we have ever stayed - bird life is abundant, yet it is calm and quiet. The $20 entry fee per car pays for improvements and facilities on site. Detailed, informative signage and boardwalks have recently been installed to improve the visitor's experience. There are three trees of note: The Dig Tree - carved in 1862 by Alexander Howitt's Search Party, Brahe's Tree - The 'Real' Dig Tree for Burke and Wills, and the 'Face' Tree - carving of Robert O'Hara Burke. These Coolabah trees are ancient and gnarly - if only they could talk! After spending a couple of hours viewing the trees, we were humbled by both the achievements and failings of the Burke and Wills Expedition.

I love the Mt Coolum Summit Hike - it’s only 2kms return and can be done in 40 mins with unbeatable views over the Sunshine Coast & the uphill makes for a great cardio workout. I did it must recently on Xmas day to work off some of the Xmas calories and felt great afterwards. A true local icon.
