The livable, lovable city of Xiamen teems with university students buzzing amid Buddhist temples, art galleries and beautiful parks. The city is actually comprised of islands; one of which, Gulangyu, is a peaceful bohemian oasis that's completely vehicle-free. With the convenience of bike sharing, this area has great views from the seat of a bicycle. The gentle breeze makes a very comfortable stretch of road an amazing bike ride. Views of land meeting ocean and clear blue skies, this is a great way to enjoy the day!

The way is a long seaside promenade with many exciting paths where we can walk just aside the sandy beach or on a platform bridge above the water. It makes it very nice walk both in day and night. Partly it is possible to ride a bike on it but i prefer walk.

Nanputuo Temple

Unfortunately when we visited there, it was partially under renovation, so some house have been closed for visitors. Also the access to the botanical garden was closed I’m not sure if this is because of COVID-19. A few years back when I visited the temple the first time the gate was open. I like this temple because it’s not over crowded and also the decoration is a mix between the traditional Chinese decor and a modern touch. I find it calming to go there, but in these days there is a lot of entrances procedure with health code and showing the passport.

Zhongshan Road Walking Street

Stroll down the street for a lazy Sunday stroll. The road is so clean and shops nearly laid out. Fulfilled my craving for Hokkien dishes like oyster omelette, fried Mee Sua and other local delicacies. There are many indoor eateries with a wide variety of fresh seafood. After trying the first outlet there were more along the way. Great ambiance.

Zhongshan Park

This is a great and free park. It has even a zoo with tiger, bear, monkey and even an albino white buffalo enclosures. It also has a great playground for kids. There is an attendant at each play station, and helmets are provided if your kids want to climb the “spider web”. Nice park to get away from the city.

Baicheng Beach

Reviewed By Stacia020 - Quebec City, Canada

There are beaches from the university all the way around the southeastern part of the island to Wuyuan bay and if you have an afternoon, you could walk or bike a good part of it. There are usually families playing in the sand, a few people offering seadoo rides, kites for sale, coconut and mango sellers and parks. Baicheng is the most accessible from the downtown area.
