This could be my favourite corner of the world. Where could be more perfect for rock pooling than Hope Cove? And Salcombe... messing about in boats, people watching and eating the best ice cream...

This is a great little shop with a fantastic selection of local cheeses. The staff were lovely and going out of their way to please and be helpful. I was looking for some cheese for Christmas presents and they always had great suggestions for cheeses to recommend, despite me being really indecisive. They even wrapped them all up for me nicely in paper. Just a shame I didn't buy any for myself!

Stumbled across this place behind St. Mary's church. A gentlemen who appeared to be "on duty" was eager to share with us the history of the town guild hall, which contains a listing of all the mayors, including the current mayor dressed in formal mayoral garb. Also a mantrap (!) and cell in which criminals were held. The hall itself is small. Worth a quick stop to see and hear a bit of English history before returning to walking the steep HIgh Street of Totnes with its charming shops.

Traveling through the region we decided to stop off in Totnes. It has a reputation as a remarkable town with an extensive High Street running from the river bridge up to the fort. And, there was a market happening which was very interesting in its size and products available from farm produce to fats food of different nationalities. But the 15th Century St Mary's church was also amazing in its style. Simple in design but impressive. Check out the stone screen. It is just impressive. There are booklets for sale so you can obtain all the facts about the impressive heritage of the church. Recommended.

Staying nearby, we stumbled upon this lovely 13th century pub. Sunday lunch was absolutely fantastic. Very nice local beef, with perfectly cooked veg, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds, all topped off with some of the tastiest gravy we’ve had. A lovely collection of parsnip crisps lifted these lunches above your everyday Sunday lunch. Vegetarian, vegan options were also available on the menu. Staff were very friendly, easy going and attentive to our group. Only minor let down is the toilets, but these are just about to be fully refurbished. Can’t recommend enough.

We were staying locally for the week, and decided to try this place as a result of the pre-lockdown reviews. Well, I can say that we were so pleased that we did!! We must've passed this place hundreds of times during holidays in the area 15-20 years ago, but for some reason never went in. Inside it's a cosy traditional country pub, and the menu offering is very extensive. I opted for the Pork Belly, and my wife had the Cajun Chicken, and both were sublime. We agreed that this was probably the best meal we had all week. Portion sizings were generous, the staff accomodated my requests to pick and mix additional items from the specials board, and the service was excellent. The young waitress actually came from London too, having now settled in Totnes, and she was delightful. We would absolutely recommend the Pig & Whistle!
