10 Food & Drink in Buenos Aires That You Shouldn't Miss

July 17, 2021 Merry Kessler

The birthplace of the tango is, like the dance itself, captivating, seductive and bustling with excited energy. Atmospheric old neighborhoods are rife with romantic restaurants and thumping nightlife, and Buenos Aires' European heritage is evident in its architecture, boulevards and parks. Cafe Tortoni, the city's oldest bar, will transport you back to 1858, and the spectacular Teatro Colon impresses just as it did in 1908. Latin America's shopping capital offers the promise of premium retail therapy along its grand, wide boulevards.

Walter was amazing host with vast knowledge of Argentine wine and explaining the different wine regions within the country. He was very personable and relaxed taking his time speaking in English and Portuguese for the four of us at the tasting. We were there over two hours as he let us enjoy the tasting while answering many questions while letting us continue finishing the any of the 6 sample bottles (4 reds, 1 white and 1 sparkling). The meats and cheeses were also excellent. All I can say is.... INCREDIBLE!

Argentine Cooking Classes

We recently started our trip to Patagonia in Buenos Aires . While here, I wanted to experience all the city had to offer and learning to make empanadas was one of them . As we were only there for 2 nights, I was having difficulty locating a class on the days I was there . I reached out to Norma about the possibility of a private class and to my surprise , she was able to accommodate us! She is quick to respond , so flexible , warm and kind . When we found out long lost friends would be in Argentina the same time as us and wanted to join in , Norma was flexible in allowing them to join us also . We met at her lovely home and made lentil stew , empanadas , and alfajores ( delicious cookies with dulche de leche). I especially loved that the empanadas are baked , not fried !The highlight was sitting down to lunch to eat everything ! All the food was AMAZING. We also had delicious argentine wines and mate- learning all About the traditions and culture . We learned so much and Norma even gave us recipes to make these at home . Once this pandemic is over , I’ll be be entertaining again and will Be making all these delicious things . This was truely a highlight for us in our trip - don’t miss this if you want a true taste of the argentine culture . Thank you Norma ! Stay safe ❤️

Empanadas Cooking Class - fantastic and friendly husband and wife duo Verónica (a sommelier) & Manuel (a professional chef) walked our group through the making of dulce de leche, flan and two different empanadas along with accompanying beverages (wine for most, thoughtfully considered non-alcoholic pairings for those of us who do not imbibe) while regaling us with Buenos Aires and Argentina's history, allocation and distribution of national resources, the early immigrants and a most apparent love of food. Hands on and observational instruction. We got to eat everything at the end! :) Well worth a half-day of your journey!

We spent a fantastic evening at the home of Saul. From the moment we walked through his door, we were treated like long, lost friends. He prepared an excellent Argentine menu - from appetizers to dessert, and taught 3 couples how to prepare the entire meal from scratch. It was a complete hands-on experience and we were rewarded for our efforts, a couple of hours later, with our delicious meal (complete with a variety of outstanding wines, personally chosen to compliment the menu). We also opted for a private tango lesson with Claudio (an experienced teacher & dancer). He was a patient man who brought out the best in our Texas 2-step feet. We'll never forget this incredible evening! Better call Saul!
