10 Cultural Tours in Belem That You Shouldn't Miss

May 4, 2022 Lashaunda Abraham

Just four miles from the center of Lisbon, Belem (or Santa Maria de Belem) is best known for Belem Tower (or Torre), a 16th-century fortified lighthouse built to guard the port. This was, after all, the port from which famous Portuguese navigators like Vasco de Gama set off to explore the world. The area is also home to Belem Palace, built in the 16th century by King Manuel and now the official residence of Portugal’s president. Belem is also home to the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery.

My girlfriend and I decided to go for this tour/experience around Lisbon to enjoy our last day in Portugal. No Regrets. We really had an amazing time, from Cascais to Sintra, going through landmarks such as Cabo do Roca (most western point of Continental Europe) to the Peña Palace, discovering wonderful sights and with the lead of our Guide exploring secret areas, with less tourist and more natural experiences. It was a pleasure to discover the region with a local, which has a passion for the place he grew up in. I would recommend it over and over. Particular thanks to Ruben.

Lisbon gradually expanded along the Tagus River and from there towards the sea. Following the river, you will first discover LX Factory, an industrial complex turned into a hub of restaurants, vintage shops and creative industries. After that, leaving the 25th of April bridge behind, you will dive into contemporary Lisbon: the newly-opened Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT). This experience can be completed later with a visit to the Belém Cultural Centre (CCB). Right after, be ready to get surprised by Belém and its beauty: Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, the Monument of the Discoveries and an incredible garden planted by the sea - they are all waiting to be discovered. At the end of the trip, treat yourself with a delicious custard tart at Lisbon’s most famous factory, Pastéis de Belém.

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city in Portugal. Like Rome, Lisbon is based on 7 hills: Sant'Ana, Santa Catarina, Castelo, Chagas, São Roque, São Vicente and Santo André. Its people, gastronomy, climate, typical neighborhoods and the constant presence of the Tagus River are some of its more desirable attributes. You will visit the most important sights in Lisbon. Your Guide will make some stops with the vehicle inviting you to make short walking routes together, where you will stroll through the streets of some of the historic districts. We invite you to join us in this experience of History, Light, Colors and Flavors as a Portuguese poet once wrote: “We will now invite the tourist to come with us. We will serve as cicerone and we will stroll through the capital, showing him the monuments, the gardens, the most notable buildings, the museums - everything that is in any way worthy of being seen in this wonderful Lisbon.” Fernando Pessoa, Lisbon: What the Tourist Should See

I went on the Sintra tour with Diogo on a beautiful day in January and had such a great experience. Diogo has endless knowledge on all that we saw with the added benefit of living and breathing Lisbon for his whole life. We connected immediately, warm and friendly. He seamlessly injected stories and facts of everything we saw, with personal anecdotes and humor. I learned so much history about this beautiful city and also the country itself and how it’s changed over the years with kings & queens, dictators and developers. By the end of the day I also had a few gems of knowledge on where to go and what to do for gay nightlife too????! What a FaBulOus day!!! Thank you Diogo????
