Everyone at Casa Xalteva from Gerald y Fatima (administrators) to Gaby (my teacher) have been very helpful and friendly. They customized the program to my requests, focusing on conversation and listening in my case. Furthermore Gaby agreed to my request to spend some of the conversation time in the streets, seeing the area and learning more about the culture in my one week of classes. I highly recommend this school and would return.

I spent 3 weeks in Playa Gigante and absolutely loved it! All the teachers there are extremely professional, catering to whatever level you are at, and have a great mix of group activities to get you meeting everyone else in the school. The owner Juan is an absolute legend and so helpful. He would organise anything you need and even for my partner's birthday made the class to be a cooking class instead where we prepared local food. The homestay with Marie Helena was also a stand out, she would love a chat at all meal times and would always make delicious food. Finally, this stretch of Nicaraguan of Pacific coast is stunning. Couldn't imagine a better location where your class overlooks the waves, and not to mention that you can easily surf twice a day and often not even have to share the waves! Easily a 5/5!

San Juan del Sur Spanish School - Day Classes

Reviewed By N9303JOcharlottew

I've just finished two weeks of Spanish lessons at Veronica's SJDS Spanish School. I've really enjoyed it and have learnt a lot. I now feel much more confident speaking Spanish to locals. My boyfriend and I chose to do four hours a day for two weeks (you can choose how many hours a day you'd like and the time of day). The classes are one on one so the lessons are tailored to your skill and speed of learning. We could have been taught together but really benefited from paying a little extra for one on one classes. We chose to have morning classes so that we would finish in time for the shuttle to nearby surf beaches. During the four hour classes you have a break where Veronica provides you with coffee and fruit. The teachers are all locals with a great knowledge of the rules of Spanish and techniques to teach it. My two teachers Mariana and Irelande were great and very patient when we came across topics that I struggled with. I started the class as a complete beginner who'd only used Duolingo but I've left understanding a lot more about the grammar and different tenses. Veronica is a lovely person to communicate with and was really helpful when my partner was too ill for a lesson (rearranging it and offering to accompany him to a doctor). One really important thing that distinguishes this school from the others is that the profits go into the local community. Recently, profits were used to build a roof on a local primary school. One thing to note is that the school is a very short walk (<10 mins) from the centre of San Juan del Sur, not 4 miles as displayed on trip advisor. Once you've completed your course you are presented with a book to help you continue to learn and practice Spanish in your own time. I'd highly recommend this school to anyone who wants to improve their ability and confidence in speaking Spanish while giving back to the local community.

Surf Popoyo Lessons

Hi, my name is Morrie. I'm a kiwi now living the dream in Nicaragua. I own and operate Surf Popoyo Lessons. I would love to teach you how to surf. I offer 3 hour lessons to beginner and beginner/intermediate surfers. My lessons tend to have around an hour of class time where we learn about rips, waves and ocean safety. We then create some muscle memory, practicing standing up. After that, it's off to the water to put it all into practice and stand up on some waves. I provide a lot of information about the steps to take following the lesson to turn yourself into a competent surfer. I only charge you USD$40, for a group class. Private classes are $70. So, what do you have to loose...? Come Down to Casa Rosada and say hi. Don't just go surfing, become a surfer. It will change your life!

I had the privilege to study Spanish with Hector a few years ago at another school. Hector is the most phenomenal Spanish teacher under whom I have ever studied (and I have had a few). He was patient, knowledgable and had an understanding of how to impart an understanding of the grammar and sentence construction in a way that no other teacher was able to do for me. I would not pass up an opportunity to study with him again!! He was also knowledgable about Nicaragua and taught me so much. Not to mention that he is just the most warm and lovely teacher .

I went three weeks to San Juan to refresh my Spanish. Although I had Spanish classes for a couple of years, I forgot everything, but after this couple of weeks of one-on-one classes, I remembered it all and I learnt a lot more. My personal teacher, Silvia, was an excellent teacher. The all Spanish approach makes that you improve rapidly. I stayed at a homestay, which isn't luxurious, but it was an amazing experience to interact with the locals and keep practising your Spanish even after class. You have a private room and private bathroom. The school also organises really nice extra-curricular activities. San Juan is a mellow beach town, and although it is said to be touristy, it is not ruined by tourism yet. Highly recommend this school!
